WILCOX, KENNEDY WIN ALPINE

Saturday fog proved to be perfect racing conditions for the seven mile Alpine Adventure Run 2017 Sitka High graduate David Wilcox took the lead starting the stair trails and topped the men’s field in a time of 1 hour 11 minutes and 57 seconds with Oregon’s Devon Calvin in second with 1:12:48.

Ester Kennedy topped the women’s field, and placed sixth overall, with a time of 1:20:41 with Oregon’s Tansy Brown taking the second women’s spot at 1:27:14. 

Kennedy battled back and forth with Juneau’s Matt Callahan who nabbed the fifth overall spot with a minute to spare. (complete story, photos, and results in Mondays paper).

 

SITKA SOFTBALL ALL-STARS DROP REGION OPENER

The Sitka Little League Majors (10-12 year old) Softball All-stars dropped their opening game in the Little League Softball West Region Tournament at San Bernardino, California, on Saturday, falling to Northern California’s Olivehurst Linda LL by the score of 10-1.

The loss puts Sitka in an elimination game on Monday against the loser of Sundays game between Arizona (Cactus Foothills LL) and Nevada (Summerlin South LL). 

Trailing 4-0 Sitka’s lone run came in the bottom of the third inning.

Adriana Denkinger stood in the batters box with a full count and hit a fly ball triple to right field.

Mecca Goldsberry put the second pitch she saw into right field as well to bring Denkinger home.

Sitka struggled to get runners on and around the bases.

Tessa Anderson led off the bottom of the first with a walk but was forced out and then the side retired.

Northern California pitcher Hallie Prather struck out the side in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the fourth Dalila Callahan led off with a bunt single but was caught on a steal attempt and then the side was retired.

Prather struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth and then pitched a ground ball out.

In the bottom of the sixth the Sitka bats all made contact but the hard hits by Anderson, Balovich and Nai’a Nelson went directly to opposition for put outs.

Kaiya Balovich took the loss in 5 innings (80 P, 15 H, 10 R, 2 SO) and Callahan relieved (1 IP, 24 P, 1 SO, 2 BB).

Northern California’s Prather went 4 innings, using 69 pitches, allowing 3 hits and 1 run, and striking out 8 while walking 1. Ashlynn Wheeler relieved (2 IP, 18 P, 2 SO).

Prather led Northern California with 4 hits; Wheeler and Prather had 2 RBI apiece; Wheeler and Alauna Kelly scored 2 runs apiece. (Complete story in Monday’s paper).

 

JUNEAU TOPS KETCHIKAN, FACE SITKA SUNDAY

Juneau’s Gastineau Channel LL Majors Baseball All-Stars eliminated Ketchikan from the Little League Alaska District 2 Majors (10-12 year old) All-Stars Tournament on Moller Field by the score of 11-1.

Ketchikan scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning as Juneau pitching loaded the bases and Jayden G was hit by a pitch to score Jesse Albecker.

Juneau put 1 run across in the first and second bottoms and then 9 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win by the run rule, 11-1.

Marcus Mendoza started on the mound for Juneau (1.2 IP, 40 P, 1 R, 1 SO, 2 BB) and Owen Woodruff relieved (3.1 IP, 53 P, 1 H, 6 SO, 2 BB).

Woodruff also led with 2 RBI; Nate Frick and Christian Nelson led with 2 runs apiece. 

Juneau left 6 runners on base, Ketchikan 8.

Ketchkan’s Cash Larson took the loss in a fine performance (4.2 IP, 112 P, 4 H, 4 SO, 8 BB).

Juneau and Sitka play for the championship Sunday at 4 p.m. on Moller Field (Sunday's championship story will run in Monday's paper).
