    Open Mic Set
    Sitka Folk will host an Open Mic at the Larkspur Cafe 7 p.m. Sept. 28.
    Musicians, poets and humorists are invited to sign up for a 10-minute performance slot after 6 p.m. A $5 donation is being encouraged at this Sitka Folk benefit. Call Ted Howard at 747-5482 with questions.

    Happy Health
    Hour on Tap
    UAF Cooperative Extension Service agent Linda Tannehill will present the next “Happy Health Hour” by video-conference presentation 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Kettleson Memorial Library’s interim Stratton Library location.
    Tannehill will explain what to consider when storing food for emergencies and what food preparation options are available during a power failure. Call the Sitka District office at 747-9440 for more information.

    Girl Scout Event
    Slated Sept. 27
    An opportunity for girls in kindergarten through 12th grades to engage in hands-on demonstrations and activities led by women working in a variety of skilled careers Women of the Trades is set 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the UAS Sitka Campus.
    The event is co-sponsored by Girl Scouts of Alaska and Sitka Girl Scouts.
    Women of the Trades presenters are drawn from a variety of community partners, including the Sitka police and fire departments, the UAS vocational/technical program, and the U.S. Coast Guard. The women represent an array of career fields, including fisheries technology, health services, helicopter mechanics, law enforcement and welding.
    There will be an opportunity for an on-site visit with female Coast Guard members at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station or the Cutter Maple. 
    Women of the Trades is a program within Girl Scouts that exists only in Alaska. 
    The cost for girls to attend is $5. Scholarships are available to those who qualify. Girls do not have to be registered members of Girl Scouts Alaska to attend.

    Japonski Boathouse
    Updates on Tap
    A work party at the Japonski Island Boathouse is slated 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
    The windows have been installed and volunteers are needed to prepare the interior for a coat of paint. An end-of-the-season painting party will be scheduled in October, with the date to be announced.

    ‘The Music Man’
    To be Shown
    The Sitka Film Society will present the classic musical, “The Music Man” 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Downtown Coliseum Theater.
    The 1962 original production stars Robert Preston as the con man who tries to bilk the residents of River City, Iowa, out of their cash by selling band instruments. Shirley Jones is the local piano teacher determined not to buy what he’s selling.
    “Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Ya Got Trouble” and “Till There was You” are among the hits from the show.
    Tickets are $5 at Old Harbor Books.

Hames Gym Floor
Getting Refinished
The Hames Center’s gym floor and racquetball courts are getting refinished and are closed through Oct. 4.
The rest of the facility is open for workouts today through Wednesday, but will be closed Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 25-27, due to fumes.
The Hames Center expressed appreciation to McMillen LLC, Barnard Construction and Wayne Hagerman at Sitka Vision Clinic for their help in getting the floor refinished.

Economic Forum
Slated for Sept. 30
The Sitka Economic Development Association invited the public to participate in the Sitka Economic Innovation Forum 3 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Centennial Hall auditorium.
Attendees are invited to take their innovative ideas for economic innovation that are ‘‘specific, realistic, are achievable within two years, focused on innovation, and related to the foundations of economic development,’’ SEDA said.
