LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
June 17
Drug abuse was reported.
A man was reported injured in a fall on a boat at Herring Cove.
A man asked for help getting his cell phone back from his wife. Police found the cell phone in the house.
A woman in a red top was reported riding her bike into traffic on HPR.
A man refusing to leave a bar agreed to go after talking to police.
A man asked for a check on his son, who has been drinking. The son said he was fine and had been drinking the night before. He was to call his parents.
At 8:15 p.m. a 911 caller said a man was yelling at a woman in a store. The man was given a warning, and the man and woman left the store together.
A dead sea lion was seen in the water off the 1800 block of HPR. Federal authorities already knew about it.
At 11:40 p.m. a man said his wife hadn’t returned home after an argument earlier in the day. The woman called police, said she was fine, but needed some extra space that night.
June 18
A hotel turned in cards and IDs left at the hotel for the past few months.
At 9:30 a.m. an intoxicated man was reported in the Eliason Harbor restrooms. He was taken to the hospital.
The harbor department said an intoxicated man was on the docks at ANB Harbor. He was given a warning and told to stay out of bars for the day.
A tow truck was arranged for a car that went off the road on Harbor Mountain Road. No injuries were reported.
A caller reported bear scat or horse manure near the ferry terminal.
At 3:45 p.m. a woman reported her 8-year-old son missing. Search and rescue was dispatched and the boy was found in good condition up the Indian River Trail, near where he lives.
Two brothers said an intoxicated man shoved one of them from behind in the 100 block of Lincoln Street. They declined to press charges, but wanted police to know what happened.
Drug charges are being forwarded to the DA’s office, after police stopped a vehicle and found drugs.
Officers talked to a couple after the man was seen screaming at the woman to get into a vehicle and then drove off before she was all the way in the vehicle. The two said they were fine, and didn’t need an officer’s help.
Two intoxicated men on Katlian left in a taxi before police arrived.
Officers gave a warning to a group of partyers on Lake Street at 10:45 p.m.
June 19
An ambulance was called for an intoxicated man who fell and cut himself.
At 1:30 a.m. a bartender said an irate customer was refusing to leave. He left and the bartender signed a trespass warning. A crowd that had gathered was dispersed by officers.
A woman passed out downtown at 2:20 a.m. was helped into a taxi.
At 2:24 a.m. a caller reported seeing a bear crossing the road in the 2900 block of HPR. The caller, who was on foot, said she was too scared to move, and refused a ride from officers. Police saw no signs of the bear.
A resident said a caller was claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House, and asking for $300 to claim a prize of $500,000. He asked if others were receiving similar fraudulent calls.
An iPhone 6S was reported lost.
A man said his grandson had stolen from a store he was supposed to be watching. Officers talked to the two.
People were reported fishing without licenses in the 4500 block of SMC.
Police left messages for Kincroft Drive residents to clean up their trash after trash cans were knocked over.
A man said the kicker was stolen off his boat, on Smith Street.
At 2:55 p.m. police were called again about the dead sea lion floating offshore. Federal wildlife authorities said they are planning to remove it.
A gold or copper bowling bag was reported lost off a bike between Airport Road and the 900 block of HPR.
A caller said a car tire and rim were stolen. Police talked to all involved and found no crime had been committed.
An ambulance was called for a woman who was reported suicidal.
A woman reported losing Michael Kors sunglasses and regular glasses.
A resident turned in a large bag filled with empty wallets and other items. One of the items had been reported missing earlier in the day.
Hospital staff asked police to place a woman in protective custody. She was left in the care of a friend. She was advised no more alcohol for the night.
At 11:57 p.m. a bear was reported in the 3200 block of HPR. Police talked to people in the area, who said they had blown an air horn to scare off the bear.
June 20
At 6:10 a.m. a caller said a man drove his bike into the caller’s vehicle and used a racial slur. Police went to talk to the man, who was from out of town and refused to open his door to officers. He was intoxicated, and admitted to the confrontation. He was given a disorderly conduct warning.
Sitka Police
Bianca G. Hernandez, 19, was cited for failing to have a valid license.
Guillermo C. Suarez, 27, was cited once and arrested once Sunday for driving with a revoked license.
In Court
Franklin D. Osborne, 64, was sentenced to 360 days, with 270 suspended, for assault in the fourth degree. He was ordered to pay restitution, and will be on probation for five years. He is to receive counseling, including up to one year of inpatient treatment. He was ordered to serve 60 days of suspended time for violating probation, and his probation was extended.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 8:32 a.m., 1:19 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. Friday; 9:42 a.m., 12:37 p.m., 4:42 p.m. and 8:35 p.m. Saturday; 12:42 a.m., 5:49 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. Sunday; and 1:52 a.m. today.
At 6:29 p.m. Sunday search and rescue was called in to rescue an injured man on Mt. Verstovia.
