Video Showing
To Carve Path
For Conference
The first event in anticipation of the international Paths Across the Pacific IX conference Aug. 17-21 will be the showing of the PBS video “1421. The Year China Discovered America?”
The showing will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sitka Public Library.
This first book by Gavin Menzies was published in 2002 – the same year the Sitka conference began. His last book, co-authored by Ian Hudson, was “Who Discovered America?’’ It ends with a summary by Hudson, who is one of the guest speakers in August, the ninth conference.
The video lasts one hour. After a 10-minute break, a discussion will be led by Paths organizer Nancy Yaw Davis, PhD. One of her publications is ‘‘The Zuni Enigma. A Native American People’s Possible Japanese Connection.’’ The book, too, is controversial – and published two years earlier.
The Paths Across the Pacific IX will begin at 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 with a public reception and conclude with a beachcombing cruise led by Curtis Ebbesmeyer, Ph.D, on Aug. 21.
For more information, call 747-3601, www.pathsacrossthepacific.org.

Trollers Target
Kings on July 1
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced today that t
The first Chinook salmon opening of the general summer commercial troll season will be 12:01 a.m. July 1 to target approximately 122,000 treaty Chinook salmon.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game said that the opening will be managed inseason with no pre-determined length and will be closed by emergency order.
Based on catch rates observed in past years with high abundance levels, the department estimates the harvest target will be taken in 6 to 7 days. However, actual harvest and catch rates can be affected significantly by the level of effort as well as weather conditions. The remaining treaty Chinook salmon quota will be available for harvest in a second opening following any closure of the coho salmon troll fishery, or no later than Aug. 20 if a coho closure is not necessary.
