Gillnetter Catches Fire; Damage Put at $100K

An early morning fire caused around $100,000 in damage to a 32-foot commercial fishing boat on the ANB Harbor transient float this morning, the Sitka Fire Department said.

Responding to the 1:04 a.m. 911 call, firefighters found the F/V American Express “fully involved” and people on the dock and passing vessels already fighting the blaze with harbor fire hoses and hoses from their own boats, said Fire Chief Dave Miller.
He said the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes.
No one was injured, and the damage was confined to the American Express, an aluminum gillnetter that was tied up to the outside of another boat, the F/V Memento, on Float 4.
The fire department responded quickly, with two trucks and an ATV containing portable pumps, and found firefighting efforts already under way by crew from the Memento and a passing vessel, Eigel B.
The combined effort prevented the fire from reaching neighboring boats or damaging the dock, Miller said.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but is believed to have started around the diesel stove in the cabin, Miller said.
No one was on board the American Express at the time of the fire, he said.
Both the Memento and the American Express are owned by Bret Hanson, the Harbor Department said, and are home ported in Bellingham, Wash.
Miller said the fire destroyed electronics equipment and most of the cabin on the American Express. He said the damage estimate is a rough one at best, and more will be known once the investigation is completed on Wednesday.
The chief praised the quick action of both the fire department and the civilians who responded.
“It’s always great that some people in the middle of the night get up out of sleep to help out the people of Sitka,” Miller said. “That’s what makes Sitka a unique place: everyone is willing to jump in and help, and make things happen. It’s really a great thing, and we see it all the time.”
