Sitka Trail Works

Hike Saturday

Sitka Trail Works will host a Mt. Verstovia hike 9 a.m. Saturday, July 30. Hikers should meet at the Verstovia trailhead, two miles east of Sitka on Sawmill Creek Road, for a free 5-mile, six-hour roundtrip guided hike.

The difficult hike has varying levels of steepness as hikers ascend the trail through a series of switchbacks, with spectacular views from the top. Hike leader is Sitka Trail Works board member Gio Villanueva.

The elevation gain is 3,300 feet. The trail remains in the forest until breaking over the ridge on the west shoulder of Mt. Verstovia. At about 2,000 feet the trail reaches a gentle ridge and generally follows it east up the shoulder. The vegetation change between the 2,000 foot level and summit is dramatic: from an open forest dominated by mountain hemlock into brushy meadows, across snowfields, through grassy sub-alpine meadow and finally into a rocky alpine area. It takes about an hour to reach and climb the peak from the end of the trail and is quite steep and exposed – only for the sure-footed climbers.

Climate Change

Film to Screen

‘‘This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate,’’ a climate change documentary based on the book by Naomi Klein, will show 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at the Larkspur Cafe.

‘‘The documentary unveils many climate myths and shows how the development of capitalism led to the climate crisis. It redefines what people know about climate change and calls for a global wake-up call,’’ organizers said.

The film showing will be followed by a short discussion including ways to get involved with the climate movement.
