Edgecumbe Runners Ready for Swift Season

Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s cross country team hit the ground running last week, beginning practices right when classes started.
Students don’t arrive at the state-run boarding school until late August, weeks after other schools have started up.
“We’re behind everybody on conditioning,” coach Josh Arnold said, “but these kids will do the work and we will be competitive by the end of the season.”
Sixty-five teenagers came out to run cross country, giving the team some depth.
“The numbers are good, the program has grown,” Arnold said. “It’s shaping up to be a good season so far.”
Junior Laura Ekada, a top runner last year, is the captain of the girls’ team this year. Shawn Williams, a senior, leads the boys. Assistant coaches Jack Davis and Emily and Aaron Routon also help run the team.
“We’ve got a real simple goal,” Arnold said. “We want to qualify both teams for state.”
Last year, the girls’ team took second at the Region V tournament to Petersburg and finished 10th in the state overall. Petersburg will be the team for them to beat this year, he said.
The boys’ team missed state by finishing behind Craig at regions in third place.
The Braves have another motivation to get to the state competition: to see their friends and family members on the course.
“The kids want to run against their friends from home,” Arnold said.
The bloys and girls teams had their first meet of the year in Ketchikan this past weekend, which gave the coach an opportunity to see where his runners are at. They travel to Petersburg this weekend.
