‘Yes on Prop 1’

Meets Tonight

Those concerned about how budget cuts will affect Sitka’s schools, roads, public safety, parks and other city services are invited to attend the “Yes on 1” citizen group informational session session 7-8 p.m. tonight at the Sitka Public Library.

The group will discuss a property tax increase. All are welcome.

 

Electric Outage

Listed Sept. 23

The city electric department is planning an electric outage 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

All businesses and residences on Alice Loop Road will be affected, including the city wastewater treatment plant, Sealing Cove Business Center, and Island Marine.

Story Time Set

‘‘Acorns Everywhere!’’ by Kevin Sherry will be one of the readings during the next preschool story time at Sitka Public Library 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.

Author at Library

Alaska author Debbie S. Miller will share her books and adventures about Alaska’s wild places and some of the favorite animals that she’s studied 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Sitka Public Library.

All are invited to attend. A selection of her books will be available for purchase including her two most recent books, ‘‘Grizzly Bears of Alaska’’ and ‘‘A King Salmon Journey,’’ both published in 2014. The event is part of the Alaska Book Week, a statewide celebration of Alaska’s authors and books that runs the first week in October.

To Screen Movie

Sitka Public Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the classic 1949 movie, “Criss Cross,” starring Burt Lancaster, Yvonne DeCarlo and Dan Duryea, 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the library.

Open House at

Japonski Boathouse

The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will host an open house and reception at the Japonski Island Boathouse 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1.

 Attendees can view the historic building, the restored doors and windows, and plans for the next phase of work. Refreshments and live music are planned, and maritime artifacts and historic photographs will be on display. For more information go to www.sitkamaritime.org or call 747-3448.

 

Benefit Dinner for

Girls BB Team

A benefit for the Sitka High girls basketball team will be 5-7 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Reception Set at

Whitmore Hall

The Sitka Fine Arts Camp invites the public to a reception 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Whitmore Hall, on the Sheldon Jackson School National Historic Landmark. 

Whitmore Hall is the building just east – to the right while standing on the grassy quadrangle – of Allen Hall.

Coffee and cookies, information about the work this summer to preserve the building’s facade, and historic photos, blueprints and artifacts will be offered.

Whitmore Hall also will be the starting point for a self-guided, informal history walk through some of Sitka’s historic buildings that afternoon, to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. Walking maps and commemorative pins will be available.

ANB to Meet

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 will meet 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the ANB Founders Hall.

Life on Oct. 1

The celebration of life for Wayne Oly Olson will be 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Sea Mountain Golf Course.  

‘‘Please consider wearing a Wayne- inspired outfit and sharing one of your favorite Wayne stories,’’ family members said.

Forum at Chamber

A Sitka School Board candidates forum will be held at the Chamber luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

Candidates Jennifer McNichol and Ed Grey will answer pre-written questions and take audience questions during the forum.

The luncheon is open to the public.

 

Park Celebrates National Public Lands Day with Free Programs

The community is invited to Sitka National Historical Park Saturday, Sept. 24, to celebrate National Public Lands Day, an annual event celebrating and protecting public lands across the United States.

The celebration will include the following ranger table talks at the visitor center.

 –9-9:45 a.m. ‘‘Subsistence Champions’’ – learn about the multitude of edible, medicinal and all-around useful plants and animals in Southeast Alaska;

–9:45-10:30 a.m. ‘‘Alaska’s Public Lands’’ – learn about the many uses and histories of public lands in the land of the midnight sun;

–10-10:45 a.m. ‘‘Totem Walk’’ – explore the history of Sitka National Historical Park’s totemic art;

–1-1:30 p.m. ‘‘Critters of the Sky, Sea and Land’’ – learn about the myriad species of wildlife that make their home in Sitka National Historical Park.

–1:30-2 p.m. ‘‘Salmon Talk’’ – learn more about the fish who have made life in Southeast Alaska possible for thousands of years.

 

Scouts Set

Registration 

 Girl Scout and Cub Scout registrations will be 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Sitka Public Library.

Girl Scouts is open to girls in kindergarten to 12th grades. Cub Scouts is open to boys in first through fifth grades. Girl Scout registration fee is $20. Boy Scout registration fee is $8.  

     Adult volunteer leaders and co-leaders are needed in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts.

SCLT to Meet

Sitka Community Land Trust will meet 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Centennial Hall. Following the meeting, board members will be attending the Sitka Comprehensive Plan meeting on housing, also at Centennial Hall.

SCLT is a community-supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. Members of the public are being encouraged to attend. For more information call 738-2888 or go to sitkaclt.org.

 

 

 

 

 

CCTC to Meet

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Cultural, Customary, and Traditional Committee will meet noon Friday, Sept. 23, at the Resource Protection Department office  at 429 Katlian Street.

SHS Teacher

One of 50

AGS Fellows

Jody Smothers-Marcello, Sitka High School, has been named American Geographical Society has named AGS Geography Teacher Fellows. 

Fifty teachers were selected from across the United States to participate in this first year of the program. It was  made possible by a gift from the Boundless Corporation.

Those selected will attend the AGS Fall Symposium on Nov. 17 and 18 at Columbia University in New York City. 

“We are very pleased to be able to have 50 of the best teachers in the country join us in New York City in November,” said Dr. John Konarski, CEO of the American Geographical Society. “Geography and geospatial science have an effect on just about every aspect of our daily lives. The collective experience and expertise of these Geography Teacher Fellows will help guide the Society as we lead the discussion about the future of geography.’’

Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society is the oldest professional geographical/geospatial organization in the United States.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

50 YEARS AGO

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
