3 Ships Cite Weather, Cancel Stops in Sitka
By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER
Sentinel Staff Writer
Three large cruise ships have canceled their port calls in Sitka this week due to weather, which means 5,000 fewer passengers before the end of the season next week.
Fred Reeder, port manager of Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska, said the Westerdam, Amsterdam and Maasdam, which were supposed to dock today, Thursday and Friday, have diverted their routes to bypass Sitka.
“You look outside and say, ‘Why? It’s gorgeous,” he said today. “But by this evening it’ll be ugly and we’re supposed to have 50, 60, 70 knot winds tomorrow.”
Canceled cruise ship stops are common this time of year, Reeder noted.
“We start getting these storms and they don’t want to come on the outside,” he said. “They want to stay inside.”
The three Holland America ships are the first major vessels to cancel Sitka stops this year, Reeder said. The loss of thousands of passengers will put a damper on business in town this week.
“That hurts,” he said. “Any time you have that, it definitely will.”
The 2,300-passenger Norwegian Line ship Norwegian Jewel is still coming this weekend, though. It’s scheduled to be at Old Sitka Dock from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. That will be the second-to-last ship of the season. The last ship, the Westerdam, is scheduled to be in Sitka next Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The National Weather Service has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms for the end of this week.
