Lt. Ankerfelt Appointed New Sitka Police Chief
By Sentinel Staff
City Administrator Mark Gorman announced today that he has appointed Lt. Jeff Ankerfelt as police chief, effective Nov. 1.
Ankerfelt has been acting chief since shortly after Chief Sheldon Schmitt went on medical leave in August.
“I am very pleased that Jeff has accepted the City’s offer to serve as our next chief of police,” Gorman said in a statement. “He has the skills, commitment and experience to lead the department with distinction.”
Before joining the Sitka Police Department in June 2014, Ankerfelt was deputy chief of the police department in Brooklyn Park, Minn., where he had served for 23 years. He has a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
“I feel incredibly fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community,” Ankerfelt said in the statement announcing his promotion to chief. “I am excited to work with our talented Sitka Police Department staff, city departments, community partners and citizens.
“Working together we can accomplish the goals outlined in our new mission statement: It is the mission of the Sitka Police Department to safeguard the lives and property of our diverse community. Our mandate is to stop crime and enhance the quality of life in Sitka by delivering professional public safety services with integrity, respect, and courage.”
Gorman said that upon his return from family medical leave, Schmitt will serve as a transition adviser, providing grant development and assistance with other management functions.
Schmitt joined the Sitka police department in July 2002 and was promoted to chief in February 2005.
“The City and Borough of Sitka is thankful for Sheldon’s leadership over the past 11 years,” Gorman said.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
