RESTORATION WORK – Father Herman Belt keeps an eye on Lincoln Street traffic this morning as workers use a Snorkel Lift to pull rotten pieces of trim from the facade of St. Michael’s Cathedral. Several pieces recently had fallen off the cathedral, which dates to 1976, causing concerns about other pieces possibly falling off and hitting pedestrians. Belt says the plan is to fabricate new wooden trim and properly flash it. East bound traffic was diverted up American Street during today’s work. Baby Girl Jones
Kiera-Lee Julia Jones was born 9:31 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Sitka Community Hospital.
At birth, the infant weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 19 inches long.
Parents are Brendan and Rachel Jones of Sitka. The father is a writer and the mother is an attorney.
Kiera-Lee joins a sister, Haley Marie.
Maternal grandparents are Donna Lee and Lou DiNardo. Paternal grandparents are Cecil Jones and Kathy Gosliner.
Safe Boating
Class Saturday
The Sitka Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering an eight-hour a safe boating class 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
Topics include boat handling, trailering, rules of the road, emergencies, pre-departure procedures, knots, radio calls, and required and suggested safety equipment.
Cost of the course is $35, which includes a text book. Those who complete the course and pass the final written exam will receive a card which insurance companies may honor with a reduction in insurance rates.
Class size is limited to 10. To register and receive directions to the classroom call Joe and Carol Meador at 738-5388 or Mike Morris at 747-8039.

Meeting Tuesday
The Human Services and Transportation Advisory Committee for Sitka will meet 3:30 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 25, at Centennial Hall.
The agenda is to set capital priorities for transportation for state fiscal year 2018. Public testimony is welcome.

To Read Work
All are invited to Writers Read, an event where local writers read their work, 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at the Island Institute office, 304 Baranof Street.
Tamie Parker Song, Emmett Williams, Zach Desmond and Island Institute artist resident Nikki Zielinski will read. A $5 donation is suggested.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
