Sitka High Teacher Gets Statewide Award

Sitka High School teacher Shasta Smith has been named the SHAPE Alaska High School Health Education Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017.

Smith, a 1992 graduate of Sitka High, has been teaching health and physical education in the Sitka School District for 11 years. She said she was surprised, and humbled, by the statewide recognition.
“I feel like I’m surrounded by such great teachers,” she said. “I feel like everybody in my school deserves an award because we have great students and staff.”
SHAPE, or the Society for Health And Physical Educators, is a statewide professional association. It selects one teacher for this award every year.
Sitka High Principal Lyle Sparrowgrove nominated Smith for the recognition.
“She has held the students accountable for their actions and work, but offered help and support through the process,” he wrote to SHAPE in a letter of recommendation. “She has the ability to work and guide students from diverse backgrounds to do their best in and out of the classroom.”
During her time at Sitka High, Smith helped implement a new program called “The Fourth R,” that teaches teens about respectful relationships. She said she was one of the first teachers in Alaska to start using the curriculum, and since then has traveled to other districts to help train educators on it.
“The state of Alaska has the highest rate of domestic violence and abuse in the nation,” Smith said. “This program directly addresses those issues. We talk a lot about healthy relationships and how to use communication to handle relationships that are unhealthy.”
In addition to teaching classes at Sitka High School, Smith also coaches the cross country running team.
Smith will receive a plaque and recognition for her award at an upcoming Sitka School Board meeting, SHAPE said.
