Boat, Passengers Saved In Peril Strait Accident

By Sentinel Staff

A Coast Guard helicopter from Sitka, Alaska State Troopers and a Good Samaritan vessel went to the aid of a boat taking on water after running aground in Peril Strait Saturday night. All three aboard were unscathed.

The 53-foot Sitka pleasure craft Danasea called the Coast Guard at 11:40 p.m. Saturday reporting it had run aground at Broad Island, about 35 miles north of Sitka.

Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter arrived shortly after midnight and a rescue swimmer and a pump were lowered to the stricken vessel. Another pump was lowered when the first couldn’t keep up with the flooding, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

Two passengers on the Danasea were taken aboard the Good Samaritan vessel while the skipper stayed on his boat. The Alaska State Trooper vessel Enforcer arrived at 3 a.m. Sunday and picked up the passengers.

The Enforcer escorted the Danasea to Sitka, arriving at Halibut Point Marine at 8:15 a.m. The skipper was aboard his boat during the trip, operating the pumps to keep up with the influx of water, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard noted that the pleasure boat was equipped with an emergency locator beacon, a life raft, survival suits and VHF radio.

The boat is owned by Brooks Areson of Sitka.

“This case illustrates the importance of collaboration with local search and rescue partners such as the Alaska State Troopers and the support of Good Samaritans lending a hand,” said Vince Grochowski, Sector Juneau Command Center watchstander. “Snow squalls in the area greatly impacted the time Coast Guard aircraft could safely remain on scene. However, the responding vessels were able to provide critical assistance to the Danasea.”
