LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
Jan. 11
At 7:15 a.m. a caller said a 14-year-old black and white border collie was missing in the 3400 block of HPR.
At 11:28 a.m. a caller said Cascade Creek Road was a sheet of ice. An officer said he’d seen a city truck with salt headed up the street.
At 11:33 a.m. a caller said the 2000 block of HPR was very slippery.
At 11:51 a.m. a 911 caller said two vehicles had slammed into his boat on Peterson Avenue because of ice on the road. No injuries resulted. Both drivers were given verbal warnings and one was cited for no valid operator’s license.
At 12:56 p.m. a driver said a taxi driver had “zoomed out” in front of him twice.
A 1989 red Jeep parked since November on Moller Street was tagged as abandoned.
A golden retriever was reported running at large by the police station.
A woman asked to speak to an officer about being harassed.
At 5:43 p.m. a 911 caller said a man had fallen on the ice in the 300 block of Seward and was lying on the ground. He was taken to a hospital.
At 6 p.m. a caller said he’d caught a black Lab running at large in the 2900 block of HPR. A terrier had escaped.
An officer helped a driver whose car battery had died at the airport.
At 11:34 p.m. a man was reported passed out in the hall of a Lake Street apartment building. He was given a warning for criminal trespass.
At 11:59 p.m. a caller said her sister spoke of “doing something stupid” then disconnected the call. The sister told officers she was not suicidal.
Jan. 12
At 12:15 a.m. hospital staff said a man who had tried to sleep in the hospital the night before was locking himself in a restroom. Officers spoke to him in the parking lot, and at his request took him for a mental health evaluation.
At 1:10 a.m. a caller said a cab driver was stuck on Pherson Street, where road conditions were very poor.
In Court
Chelsey Nichole Lyons, 23, had her suspended sentence revoked on a July 2015 charge of tampering with physical evidence – destroy/alter/supress. She was sentenced to 18 months with 16 months and 22 days suspended, for a total of 38 days with credit for time served. Probation was extended for two years.
Zachary A. Loewen, 26, on a charge of criminal trespass in the second degree, upon premises, was sentenced to five days with credit for time served.
Kerry Sven Olaf Stromme, 34, on a charge of driving under the influence pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days, with 27 suspended, and fined $6,000 with $4,500 suspended. He is to contact an alcohol treatment agency for evaluation and follow recommendations. His license was revoked for 90 days, and after driving privileges are restored he is to use an ignition interlock device for six months. He will be on probation for one year.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 12:56 a.m., 1:18 p.m. and 5:44 p.m. Wednesday, and 7:15 a.m. today.
