Miyasato Quits Position On STA Council

By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER

Sentinel Staff Writer

Benjamen Miyasato has resigned from his seat on the Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Tribal Council.

The former Sitka Assembly member submitted his letter of resignation at a Tribal Council meeting Wednesday night, Tribal Council Chair KathyHope Erickson said. It was effective immediately.

“He didn’t give me any details,” Erickson said. “He just had to because of his own feeling of what is right.”

Miyasato was on the Assembly for three years before running for mayor last October. His current two-year term on the Tribal Council was set to end this fall.

“I thanked him for his service and dedication to our tribal citizens,” Erickson said. “He came in with a lot of energy and he was still attending a lot of committee meetings and others on behalf of the tribe. I thought it was amazing he was able to hold down two elected positions.”

Miyasato told the Sentinel the reason he resigned “is a long story.”

“It needed to be done to address issues that have been ongoing since last year,” he said.

Miyasato said more details would be forthcoming.

Erickson said the council will make an appointment to fill the vacant seat, and is encouraging tribal citizens to apply. Members must be age 30 or older and have lived in Sitka for at least a year.

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska is holding its annual meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.
