Tribal Council

Vacancy Filled

Martha Moses has been named to the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Tribal Council, STA said today.

Moses, fills a council vacancy left by Ben Miyasato, who resigned in January. She will serve until Nov. 30, 2017.

‘‘We would like to thank each Tribal citizen who submitted their name for consideration,’’ STA said in a news release. ‘‘We truly appreciate your interest in serving tribal citizens.’’

 

 

Exercise, Nutrition

Talk on Feb. 21

‘‘Weight Management through Exercise and Nutrition’’ will be presented 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Hames Center.

All are invited to join Mark Kasprowicz, PT, DPT, and Hames nutrition coach Danielle Cassedy, MSN, CPT, for this final series class.

Attendees will learn how to set nutrition and exercise goals and stick with them, what a balanced meal looks like, and how exercise and nutrition can help with weight management goals.

Story Time Set

‘‘Jazz Baby’’ by R. Gregory Christie will be one of the readings during the next preschool story time at Sitka Public Library 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.

The program theme will be jazz music and it includes readings, rhymes, songs and a craft project. Everybody is welcome. 

 

‘Tinkering Time’

Slated at Library 

Sitka Public Library will offer a free Tinkering Lab program 10:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday, March 14.

Ages 9 to 12 can create original structures with straws and special connectors. Snap circuits, a makey makey kit and Lego projects will be available.

Registration is required and seats are limited. Families may register at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 747-8708.

 

Dream Catcher

Design Taught

A dream catcher design class will be taught by Mia Merculief 6-8 p.m. Thursdays for five weeks beginning Feb. 23 at the Centennial Hall Eagle Room

Sitka Tribe of Alaska  citizens, staff and community members are invited to participate.

To register, contact Frea Hillaire at 623-7772. Classes are free. Dinner and project supplies are provided.

The event is sponsored by STA Social Services Department Family Preservation Programs.

 

Open Gym, Skating

Offered this Spring

Sitka Tribe of Alaska citizens, staff and their families are invited to open gym and rollerskating activities at Blatchley Middle School 1-3 p.m. Saturdays March 5, 26, April 2, 9, 23, 30 and May 7.

 

‘Johnny Guitar’

To be Screened

Sitka Public Library’s Film Noir Club will screen the 1954 cult classic western noir “Johnny Guitar,” starring Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden, 7 p.m. Saturday, March 4.

Little League

Tryouts Slated

Sitka Little League will hold skills evaluations 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, and Sunday, Feb. 26, at Blatchley Middle School.

The schedule is: 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. softball league ages 12-16; 12:15-1:15 p.m. softball, 8-11; 1:30-2:30  p.m. baseball minors, 9-11; 2:45-3:45 p.m. baseball majors, 9-12; 4-5 p.m. baseball juniors, 13-16.

Players must be registered through sitkalittleleague.org prior to tryouts.  Take clean gym shoes and glove to tryouts. Questions can be emailed to sitkalittleleague@gmail.com

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

50 YEARS AGO

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
