Sitka Girls Soar Ahead at State
By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER

The Sitka High girls basketball team is moving to the next round at state after a 77-22 win against Valdez today at the ASAA/First National Bank of Alaska Class 3A Girls Basketball Tournament in Anchorage.
“That’s a great way to start the tournament,” Sitka Coach Sondra Lundvick said.

The Sitka boys team did not fare as well, however, losing to Monroe Catholic today 53-33. The boys are now vying for a fourth-place finish in the 3A state tournament. They play again 9:30 a.m. Friday, facing the loser of the Valdez vs. Anchorage Christian Schools game.
The girls are now three wins away from a state title. They play again 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of the Nikiski vs. Grace Christian match.
The Lady Wolves started the game against Valdez with a solid lead and maintained that throughout all quarters. At half, the Wolves led 44-11.
“We jumped right in there and got in the flow early,” Lundvick said. “I thought the kids played very selflessly and played as a team. We were pretty sharp. It felt good.”
Sitka’s Tatum Bayne was the top scorer with 22 points. She also was named a “player of the game.”
Zoe Krupa scored 19 points, Alex Kirby had 12, Abby Forrester and Jessica Davis had 8 each, Joei Vidad had 6 and Marlis Boord scored 5.
The Sitka boys were having a hard time with the buckets today, shooting at 44 percent from the field and with only 4 of 11 free throws made. The boys also had double the number of turnovers as their opponents. They lagged at halftime 28-17 and while they tried to chip away at the deficit the Monroe Rams kept pulling ahead.
Jesse Lantiegne was “player of the game” for the Sitka boys.
Lundvick said the girls team is going to continue its style of play from today in the upcoming games, such as sharing the ball and pushing turnovers.
“We want to keep playing well and put ourselves in a position,” she said.
