Wolves Finish Best Season Yet
By Sentinel Sports
The Sitka High soccer team ended its season this year with its best record yet.
The Wolves finished 5-3-2, after playing the Juneau-Douglas High Crimson Bears in their final games last weekend.
“Our only losses were to JDHS,” Head Coach Eric Van Cise said. “All 10 games this season were equal battles with well-earned wins.”
The soccer team had the most wins this season out of its nine-year history, he said.
On Friday, the Wolves held their own against the Bears, finishing the game with a 2-2 tie.
That match broke the Bears’ season-long winning streak, Van Cise said.

On Saturday, Juneau beat out Sitka 2-1 after a fight.
Friday’s match was 0-0 at halftime, the coach said.
“The second half, JDHS scored first followed by a Wolves breakaway goal by midfielder Ethan Pike,” Van Cise said.
Pike converted again giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead, but then JDHS tied the game with a shot that slipped by the keeper’s grip.
“It was a great match all around,” he said. “As coaches, Dennis DeWinter and I witnessed our team defend and attack equally against the region’s only undefeated team.”
Saturday’s match started out much like the previous game, with a score of 0-0 at the half.
“We rotated in our newer bench players, this being the final game of the year,” Van Cise said. “They did well and provided the needed rest break for our starters.”
But then Juneau knocked in two goals in 15 minutes.
“We answered back when Pike scored on a nice series of team passes that set up his shot,” Van Cise said.
The Bears held on to finish the game ahead, he said.
“As coaches, we could not be prouder of our team,” Van Cise said.
The team is heading into a rebuilding year, as they will lose 10 of their 17 players to graduation and moves.
“We encourage all our students to give soccer a look,” the coach said. “Regardless of skill or gender, we have a spot for you.”
