LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
Aug. 8
A caller wanted help evicting a couple who’d been in the home for a week and hadn’t paid what they’d said they would. She was told it’s a civil issue.
At 9:11 a.m. officers were asked to interview two people off the cruise ship Sojourn, at the deep water dock.
A caller said a local group had set a fence on fire on Etolin Street. Officers determined it was a civil issue.
At 11:30 a.m. two children, about age 4, were reported in the road in the 300 block of Cascade Street. Officers contacted the mother, who said they’d been retrieving a toy and were OK.
At 12:19 p.m. a caller reported seeing a small black bear in the 700 block of Sirstad Street.
At 2:52 p.m. a ferry terminal worker said a ferry had asked for an officer to help with a passenger who was possibly off his meds and yelling at himself. The man refused EMS service but after the first mate gave him a warning the man was allowed to continue his trip.
At 4:18 p.m. the library said a man who had just been trespassed was at the library. He left on foot.
A man said his iPad was stolen from his backpack at a downtown bar over the weekend.
A caller said a friend in Ketchikan had sent a message saying goodbye and mentioning not reaching a birthday. Ketchikan Police Dept. was notified.
At 5:30 p.m. a caller reported seeing a vehicle on Moller Drive, packed with about seven people, arms and legs hanging outside, and a child standing up inside. An officer found the vehicle at the ballfield and advised the driver of the complaint.
A woman said she’d left her iPhone 6S+ at the Assembly meeting.
At 9:43 p.m. a caller said a man in his 40s was giving out money to kids around age 10 at the movie theater. He was gone when officers arrived.
At 10:20 p.m. a caller said a woman had stolen a purse from Castle Hill then left on a bike. Later, the caller said the woman had admitted taking the purse after stealing $40 cash from it. Officers were investigating.
At 11:17 p.m. a caller reported a teen party at Herring Cove, and a driver in a black truck nearly hit her vehicle twice. Officers found the driver at ANB Harbor and found he wasn’t intoxicated.
At 11:37 p.m. fireworks were reported in the 4800 of HPR.
Aug. 9
At 12:50 a.m. a caller reported juveniles and a bonfire at Herring Cove. Officers confiscated alcohol and marijuana, and the juveniles were taken home.
Sitka Police
Kendra L. Skultka, 35, was remanded for violating conditions of release by consuming alcohol.
Bryan R. Joseph, 17, and Hunter Hatmaker, 15, were cited for minor consuming Tuesday night.
A charge of making a false statement on a Fish & Game application filed against Morris Keeney, 73, of Elfin Cove, was dismissed.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received seven ambulance calls Tuesday and two by 8 a.m. today.
At 7:23 p.m. Tuesday an engine was sent to 131 Granite Creek Road where a controlled burn was taking place. The fire hall had not been notified about it in advance.
At 8:41 p.m. Tuesday an engine was sent to Keet Gooshi Heen on a false alarm.
