SHS Boys, SHS and MEHS Girls Head to State X-Country

By SHANNON HAUGLAND

“They did amazing,” commented the Wolves’ head coach Shasta Smith. “It was really, really exciting.”
The SHS boys and girls and Mt. Edgecumbe High School girls all earned spots at the state meet next weekend. Mt. Edgecumbe boys also had a strong finish for the season.

“The kids work really hard, in a short amount of time,” said MEHS coach Josh Arnold. “I always say, we’re not racing other teams; we’re racing ourselves. If we get faster every week, we’ve met our goal. And we did that.”
It was a wet weekend in Ketchikan, but the kids made the most of the 3.1-mile course at Ward Lake, which carries them uphill for the first third of a mile then around a “beautiful” and very fast course, Arnold said.
“It’s a fast run, it’s a fast course, and a great spectator course,” the MEHS coach said.
    The boys team results in the Division II race (smaller schools) were: 1. Sitka 20; 2. Petersburg 66; 3. Haines 86; 4. Kake 116; 5. Mt Edgecumbe 139; 6. Skagway 151; 7. Craig 162, 8. Klawock 227; 9. Metlakatla 250; 10. Hydaburg 262; 11. Hoonah 290.
    The girls results for Division II: 1. Petersburg 15; 2. Mt Edgecumbe 69; 3. Sitka 76; 4. Haines 99; 5. Wrangell 115; 6. Skagway 171.
Sitka High
The Wolves’ Joe Pate took first in the boys race, followed by Dominic Baciocco, Skyler MacIntyre, Tabor Buxton, in second, third and fourth. The fifth scoring member of the team, newcomer Derek Bartlett, came in 10th, for a 20-point finish for the Wolves.
It was Pate’s first meet win, coach Smith said.
“He was really excited; he worked really hard,” the coach said. She praised the other runners at the top of the pack, including Bartlett for a strong first season, and Buxton, who “ran out of his mind,” with a fourth-place finish and a best time.

All of the scoring members of the team are underclassmen, which bodes well for the future of the team. Smith also praised team captain Kincaid Parsons, a senior, for his leadership “on and off the course,” despite nursing an injury, while still competing in this race.
The girls also showed prowess on the course, with the team taking third overall. Junior Ella Lubin captured seventh, with Ayla McNeilley and Sable Zellhuber taking 10th and 13th, respectively. Makenna Smith and Zofia Danielson had lifetime best times.
“They all had really good races,” Smith said. “It was nice to see big smiles on their faces when they crossed the finish line, knowing they gave it their best effort. It was awesome.”
Smith said she will be working with the runners on “maintaining focus” this week after their top performances at the Ketchikan race. They were welcomed home at the Sitka airport Sunday with cheers and signs of congratulations from family and friends, which the team appreciated, she said.
“It’s hard to get that focus back,” Smith said. “We need to remember we have one week to take care of business. They’re bouncing, and light and full of energy – we want to make sure that channels to the Saturday race. ... Parents should be proud of these kids. They worked really hard.”

Mt. Edgecumbe
Mt. Edgecumbe Coach Josh Arnold was pleased to see the girls make it to state this year, after narrowly missing the opportunity last year.
He said it was the Petersburg girls’ day, crossing the line with a perfect score (15), but the Braves showed their mettle against the rest of the field, coming up with a second-place finish as a team.
Bristel Charlie was the first MEHS runner, in sixth place, finishing 11 seconds behind the fifth Petersburg runner.
“It’s fun to be looking forward to another race,” Arnold said. The Edgecumbe season is a little shorter than the season for the rest of the competitors, since they just started practicing in the last week of August, but he’s proud to see the kids make the most of their short season, with a few logging personal records on the Ketchikan course.
“I wish we had four more races. But we’ll see how it works out – the girls get to go to state,” Arnold said.
The kids worked hard the entire season to improve their performance, and in that sense the season was a big success.
“We have to celebrate that, it was the fastest race of the season,” he said. “I want them to feel good about their season – they had their fastest runs.”
Arnold praised the Sitka High kids for their hard work and sportsmanship throughout the season, led by Coach Smith.
“It’s fun to watch them run,” he said of the SHS boys. “You can’t help but cheer for them.”
He said he was sorry to see the MEHS boys not make it to state, despite their steady efforts this season. But he’s looking forward to seeing what the girls will do on the challenging and hilly Bartlett course next weekend in Anchorage.
