This Week in Girls on the Run
By Sitkans Against Family Violence
Girls on the Run is an empowerment-based program for girls in third through fifth grades, currently in its 10th season at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School. GOTR is much more than an after-school activity. It is designed to bring girls together with strength and resilience to prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games, GOTR prepares girls for a final celebratory 5K fun run while teaching life-skills and unleashing confidence.
Recently, GOTR participants have been focusing on building their confidence and self-love by talking about Star Power. Star Power is a way for each girl to visualize her strengths and unique qualities, thereby unleashing her inner confidence. By encouraging the girls to focus on their positive inner voices, we counteract gloominess and negativity. It’s important for girls to know how to overcome negative feelings about themselves by focusing on the things they appreciate about themselves. We also emphasized the importance of holding each other up and saying what we appreciate and love about each other. This helps everyone build their Star Power. Here are some quotes from the girls about what they learned:
–“I can always be optimistic, and when others are down and their star isn’t very shiny, I can give them a helping hand.”
–“Star Power means to try not to be negative all the time, and instead focus on the good!”
–“You don’t want to say negative things about yourself, because then you’ll only be gloomy, so you should say positive things about yourself.”
Throughout this season, GOTR will keep providing the Sitka community with updates from the program. We also hope to give mentors and parents an opportunity to pass on skills from GOTR to the youths in your life. Here are some conversation starters for talking with kids about star power, confidence, and self-love:
–What’s your favorite thing about yourself?
–When you’re feeling sad, what can you do to remind yourself that you’re a star?
–Do you think your friends at school feel sad sometimes? How can you help remind them of their Star Power?
Girls on the Run is sponsored by Sitkans Against Family Violence. Call 747-3370 for more information.
