Sitka Herring Fishery to Go on 2-Hour Notice
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

The Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery will go on two-hour notice starting 7 a.m. Tuesday, the Department of Fish and Game announced Sunday.
“This means that a fishery could be expected with a minimum of two hours notice after the effective time,” F&G said in a news release.
An organizational meeting was held at 1 p.m. today at the Westmark Sitka Hotel for those involved with the fishery and the general public to discuss this year’s fishery.
This year’s fishery will be conducted in a “noncompetitive” manner, but openings will still be called for the fishery.
Eric Coonradt, area management biologist for Fish and Game, said jig samples taken Sunday at Crow Pass showed mature roe at 8.67 percent, 2.43 percent immature roe and 135 gram average fish.
“With that I felt the need to call the two-hour notice and run with that,” he said today.
He said the two-hour notice was prompted by the “visibility of herring schools in shallow waters, lack of commercial sample and mature herring in the jig sample.”
But he also said that the jig sample was much smaller than the usual test samples taken from a much larger set.
“It’s not necessarily representative of what’s out there; it’s just a piece of information,” Coonradt said. “With the notice we have to give people to get here, I’m hoping we’re right on target with the two-hour notice.”
He said that on a flyover of the fishing area on Sunday no herring spawn was seen, but several large herring schools were seen on the entire length of Crow Pass. The highest concentration of herring predators had moved to the Crow Pass/Bieli Rock area by Sunday, where numerous whales were seen feeding on the herring schools observed in the area and several large groups of sea lions were observed near the whales, he said.
“The picture today was fairly similar,” he said this morning. “Quite a few predators in closed waters (off Halibut Point Rec to Crow Pass), and similar numbers were seen in Hayward Strait and Inner Point.”
The Fish and Game research vessel is expected to arrive on Tuesday.
Coonradt noted that all processors, fishing vessels and tenders must be registered before participating in the fishery. He said seiners wanting to conduct practice sets or stretch nets may do so in Eastern Channel south of Jamestown Bay, until further notice.
