Alaska Day Panel
To Meet Tuesday
Coordinators for Sitka’s 2018 mid-October community Alaska Day Festival will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Centennial Hall.
Proposals will be discussed for 2018 activities commemorating the official transfer of Russian claim in Alaska to the United States at Sitka on Oct. 18, 1867.
A secondary focus will be chosen to recognize the role of museums and other caretakers of the stories and artifacts of historic events and cultural traditions important in Sitka’s heritage.
The Alaska Day Committee will meet each following third Tuesday of the month. Persons having comments about festival activities, or new volunteers, can attend or call Chairman Ted Allio at 747-5124, Vice Chair Steve Dalquist at 752-0750, or schedule coordinator Elaine Strelow at 747-3469.

Sets Speaker Series
Sitka Historical Society announces a speakers series for the run-up to the grand opening of the new Sitka History Museum at Centennial Hall.
The second presentation will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Sitka National Historical Park with Bob Sam. His topic will be ‘‘Museums.’’

Quilt Raffle
Tickets on Sale
The Sitka Cancer Survivor Society will sell quilt raffle tickets at the Rainy Day Bazaar, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Centennial Hall.
This will be the first viewing of this year’s quilts.
Raffle tickets on sale are for three prizes: “Christmas Wreaths,’’ created by Ocean Wave Quilt Guild, quilted by Alice Cameron; “Life is a Basketful of Cherries,’’ hand-quilted by Cheryl Vastola, which won a State Fair Grand Champion award for Large Lap quilt; and “Handmade Moccasins” by Linda Janacek.Tickets are $5 each.
Proceeds help fund mini-grants for those dealing with cancer in Sitka. The drawing will be Dec. 2.
Anyone who is dealing with Cancer can apply for a mini-grant. Contact Candi Barger at Sitka Realty for an application and with questions.
