Harp Sing Set
The fifth Sunday Sitka Sacred Harp Sing is set 3:30-5 p.m. April 29 at the Pioneers Home Chapel. The group will sing from the Cooper Book (Blue book) this session.

School Board
Meets May 1
The Sitka School Board will meet 6:30 p.m. May 1 at the Sitka High School library.
Prior to the meeting, the board will hold a retirement celebration for Kent Bovee, Toby Campbell and Michele Friedman at 6 p.m. in the SHS Commons. The public is invited to attend.
Coastal Cleanup
Event Saturday
The Sitka Sound Science Center will host the Coastal Code Cleanup, sponsored by Alaskan Brewing Company, noon-6 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Science Center.
The group will pick up trash bags and supplies, then head out to local beaches and waterways to clean up trash. Volunteers will meet back at the science center at 4 p.m. for a barbecue, with drinks being provided by Alaskan Brewing, and prizes.
Those with questions can contact Sandy at 747-8878, extension 16. The event is open to everyone. Families and groups are encouraged to participate and to work in teams.
Natural History
Seminar Thursday
The Natural History seminar series will present a double feature 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in room 229 at UAS-Sitka Campus.
The UAS dive research class will present its findings on baseline abundance and distribution of flora and fauna in Sitka Sound at 7 p.m. Over the past three months, 12 divers have performed more than 500 dives in the local Sitka area comparing exposed and protected kelp forests.
At 7:30 p.m., Elizabeth Graham, an entomologist with the Juneau Forestry Sciences Laboratory, will present “What’s Bugging Our Spruce Trees?’’ a talk about the insects and other organisms that are damaging spruce trees in Southeast Alaska.
Some of the bugs Graham will discuss are native to the area, some aren’t, but a few have the potential to cause a big problem for Sitka spruce trees, organizers said. Attendees will learn some of the different insects impacting the trees, and how to identify signs and symptoms of their damage
The Natural History seminar series is supported by a grant from the Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust to the Sitka Sound Science Center and by UAS and the National Park Service.

Eco-Discovery
Event on Friday
The case of the Unidentified Swimming Object will be investigated at the Eco-Discovery Event 10 a.m.-noon Friday, April 27, at the Sitka Sound Science Center.
Participants will explore wildlife behaviors, plant adaptations and local seasonal changes at this inservice day activity.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
