TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Sitka Crushes Petersburg 23-1 at Region V Tourney

The Sitka High School Wolves topped the Petersburg Vikings 23-1 in a game shortened to five innings per the 10-run mercy rule in today’s opening day of the double elimination format Region V Baseball Tournament at Moller Field.
The Wolves scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, and went scoreless in the third before exploding the leather of the baseball with a barrage of hits in the fourth.
Trevin Carley led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and stole second. Bryce Kelly walked, and the two advanced on a double steal and scored one-out later on an Emmitt Andersen double for a 9-0 lead.
Kyler Sumauang walked and Andersen advanced to third on a failed pick off attempt and scored on a Tanner Snyder single for 10-0. Sumauang scored on a fielding error on a Gavin Flores hit, and Camden Suarez followed with an in the park home run for a 14-0 advantage.
Carley walked in his second at bat of the inning and scored on a Kelly double for 15-0. Kyler Brenton and Anderson walked to load the bases and Sumauang singled to score Kelly for 16-0. Snyder reached on an error scoring Brenton for 17-0, and Flores dropped a fly ball in to score Anderson for 18-0. With JD Gagner at the plate, a wild pitch scored Snyder. Gagner reached scoring a run. Simic hit a double to clean off the bases again and the Wolves started subbing in the batters, loading the bases once more with two outs and building a 23-0 lead before exchanging their bats for gloves.
The Vikings loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and Breckon Davis scored on a fielder’s choice for Petersburg’s lone run of the game.
James Comas got the win on the mound.
The Wolves, the tourney’s #4 seed, will play #number 1 tourney seed Ketchikan tonight at 6 p.m., and #2 seed Juneau-Douglas is playing will play #3 seed Thunder Mountain.
The winner of Sitka/Ketchikan will play the winner of JD/TM at noon tomorrow. Games run into Saturday with the title scheduled for 11 a.m.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
