TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Wolves Baseball Stuns Top-Seeded Ketchikan

BULLETIN – Sitka High took its first loss of the Region V baseball tournament this afternoon, losing 6-0 against Juneau-Douglas. The Wolves will play an elimination game 6 p.m. tonight against the winner of Thunder Mountain and Ketchikan game. The victor of that game plays Juneau at 11 a.m. Saturday for the championship.

-----

JDHS advanced to Saturday’s championship game at 11 a.m. The winner of the 6 p.m. game will also advance to Saturday’s championship. JDHS’ Kasey Watts pitched a complete game against Sitka, striking out six, walking five, and allowing just one hit. Sitka’s Camden Suarez took the loss in 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 6 runs, striking out 9, walking 2, and giving up a home run to Michael Cesar who went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Ketchikan has qualified for the state tournament, May 31-June 2 in Anchorage, by virtue of the top southeast conference regular season record. The second seed to state will be the Region V tournament winner. If KTN wins the tournament, the runner-up will be the second qualifier.

The Sitka High Wolves put their second football-sized score of the day in the books with a 15-0 drubbing of the number-one seeded Ketchikan Kings in the Region V baseball tournament at Moller Field on Thursday night. Just six hours earlier the Wolves opened tourney play by tromping Petersburg 23-1.

“We spent all week hitting in practice,” Sitka coach Kenny Carley said. “I think it paid off.”

The Wolves are currently playing against Juneau-Douglas for a berth in Saturday’s championship game (the score was not available by press time). JDHS beat Thunder Mountain 12-0 in their tourney opener Thursday afternoon.

Against Ketchikan, senior pitcher Vaughn Blankenship shut down the Kings bats, allowing just two hits in two innings on 31 pitches, walking four batters and striking out four.

Sitka sophomore Kyler Brenton relieved for two innings and senior Emmitt Anderson struck out the first Kings’ batter in the fifth, the second batter fouled out to junior catcher Morgan Simic, and Anderson fielded the third out himself to end the shortened game.

The Kings’ Michael Starr took the loss, giving up 9 runs on four hits, striking out two and walking six in two innings. Ketchikan relievers were Gabe Bowlin (2ip, 4h, 6r, 2so,4bb) and Brock King (1ip, 1h).

Sitka’s Simic was 3-4 at the plate, including a triple and two doubles, with 5 runs batted in. Freshman Trevin Carley had 3 RBI’s, and seniors Camden Suarez, Kyler Sumauang, and Tanner Snyder, junior Bryce Kelly, and sophomore Gavin Flores 1 apiece. Kelly also put a triple into the outfield.

Suarez scored 3 runs, Flores, Carley, Sumauang, and junior JD Gagner 2 each, Kelly, Andersen, Brenton, and freshman Keaton Koelling 1 apiece.

Sumauang walked three times, seniors Jagr McGraw and Tanner Snyder, Suarez, Carley, Kelly, Brenton, and Koelling all earned one free pass.

“Hitting is contagious,” Carley said. “And our bats finally came to life, with 38 runs scored to one allowed over two games. I’m proud of all of our hitters.”

The Wolves scored in every inning, notching 3 runs in the first, 1 in the second, 7 more in the third inning, 1 in the fourth and 2 in the fifth.

Ketchikan couldn’t get to Blankenship and any contact on his pitches were easily fielded by the Wolves defense. Sitka’s run support allowed Blankenship to leave the game in the second inning, meaning he will be available to throw again on Saturday.

“Pitching and defense were on today,” Carley said. “Vaughn was pitching well, keeping the ball down and throwing a lot of strikes. We didn’t burn up any pitchers and we’re feeling really good right now.”

The winner of today’s Sitka and Juneau Douglas matchup (the score was not available by press time) plays in Saturday’s championship game at 11 a.m.

TMHS eliminated Petersburg 18-5 this morning and advanced to play KTN in an elimination game at 3 p.m. today (score was not available by press time). The winner of that 3 p.m. game will play again at 6 p.m. tonight against the loser of Sitka/JDHS to also advance to Saturday’s championship matchup.

Ketchikan has earned a berth to the state tournament, May 31-June 2 in Anchorage, by having the best conference season record. The second berth will be the tournament winner or, if Ketchikan wins, the team that falls to them on Saturday.

Against Petersburg, Sitka pitcher James Comas allowed two hits, struck out four and walked five in the shortened game. Kelly went 4-4 at the plate with eight RBI. Flores, Suarez and Gagner scored 3 runs apiece, Kelly, Anderson, Sumauang, and Snyder 2 each, Simic and Brenton 1.
