Sitka Summer Music Festival

Festival Notes

By Susan Wingrove-Reed

What wonderful music is being joyfully shared at the SSMF! The glorious sounds of cello, violin and piano, a big dose of Spanish music that had our hearts dancing… so grateful to Zuill, Doris, Alfredo, Andrew, Cecily and Tom! So now more treats in store – TRIO JINX is in town – flute, violin/viola and string bass! These wonderful young artists will play a don’t-miss set at the Mean Queen Wednesday nite at 6:30 … including classical, jazz, fusion. Wow. AND they will be featured at Thursday’s free Bach’s Lunch in the Odess at 12:15.

Friday night’s 7:30 concert (after pre-concert chat/interview at 6:45) opens with a splendid set of Debussy and Liszt piano solos. Doris Stevenson will virtuosically paint a set of vivid musical pictures, starting with Debussy’s famous ‘‘Gardens in the Rain’’ that describes a windy, rainy day (Sitkans will totally relate!) … Pianist Emmanuel Ax wittily described the ending of Gardens as “a bright splash-in-the-face of pianistic puddle-jumping.” Continuing with her water theme, Doris will enchant us with ‘‘Reflections in the Water’’ full of shimmering arpeggios, chord progressions and colors. Liszt’s Sonetto 104 del Petrarca concludes her solo set – inspired by Liszt’s travels with his lover Marie d’Agoult in Italy. Based on a sonnet by Petrarch (1304-1374), it explores the poem’s extreme emotions “I feede in sorrow and laughe in all my payne.” Liszt’s fiery, moody, emotional music explores the highs and lows of love with soaring climaxes, unexpected silences and lots of contrast.

Next on Friday, Zuill and Doris will collaborate on Rachmaninov’s yearning ‘‘Vocalise’’ and Chopin’s haunting ‘‘Nocturne in C Sharp Minor.’’ The popular ‘‘Vocalise’’ was originally a song without words for soprano and piano and transcribes beautifully to the cello, the instrument most frequently compared to the human voice. Chopin’s Nocturne is an elegant, atmospheric miniature dedicated to his sister Ludwike and featured in the popular movie “The Pianist.” They will top off their set with Chopin’s ‘‘Polonaise Brillante’’ – a dazzling showpiece written for a beautiful 17-year old Polish princess and her cello-playing father.

Friday’s concert will also feature two Spanish composers. Manuel de Falla’s evocative Suite Populaire Espagnol is a set of six songs for cello and piano. Andrew and Alfredo will explore this passionate music, full of dance rhythms and gorgeous folk-inspired tunes. Then Cecily, Tom and Trio Jinx’s Ledah will add colorful upper strings for Enrique Granados’s Piano Quintet in G Minor. Life-loving Granados collected books and paintings and was a huge fan of auto racing and motorcycling. His life was cut short in 1916 when he delayed his return to Spain to play a concert for President Wilson; he was a passenger on the Sussex which was sunk by a German torpedo. His romantic quintet is rich with virtuosity and spice.

Saturday’s concert will showcase the unique and exciting TRIO JINX – viola, flute and string bass. They will open with a stunning trio by Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff that includes rustic flavors and all kinds of musical acrobatics. Next, violist and composer Ledah Finck’s Gladly Beyond “was sparked by a poem of e.e.cummings… ‘somewhere I have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence…’ with gardensful of multisensory images that call for a sonic response.”  The first half will conclude with legendary pianist Chick Corea’s jazz fusion classic “Spain.” Just saying – you HAVE to experience TRIO JINX. This is a classical music with a memorable twist.

Saturday’s concert finale is a beloved chamber music masterpiece about fishing. Not kidding! Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet is a piano quartet plus a string bass – an intimate and delightful work. And it includes an incredible 4th movement theme and variations based on Schubert’s famous song “The Trout”; a trout is joyfully swimming in a sparkling stream while a determined fisherman attempts to catch the delectable prize, but the clever fish makes an easy escape. You have to come to the concert to find out who wins the battle – fish or human – does grilled trout beckon?

To conclude your joyful musical weekend, make sure you have a ticket to the Crab Feed, a scrumptious annual feast that helps support the SSMF. 3-5 p.m. at Crescent Harbor, rain or shine! And I hope to see you at Tuesday’s 5:45 p.m. preview event/mini-concert at Stevenson!

Housing Coalition

Director in Sitka

Brian Wilson, the executive director of the Alaska Coalition on Housing and Homelessness, will speak 7 p.m. Monday, June 25 at the Centennial Hall Raven Room.

His topic will be the statewide picture of housing and homelessness in Alaska and the implications for the Sitka community.

AKCH2 carries out the day-to-day management of the Balance of State Continuum of Care program and is Alaska’s homeless and affordable housing advocacy body.

Wilson will be updating the community on recent coalition work plans, opportunities for on-going technical assistance, and also educating himself on Sitka’s housing and homeless issues.

Prior to becoming the AKCH2 director in 2015, Wilson worked for the Alaska Mental Health Board and the Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. He also served as a senior program specialist for the city of Olympia, Washington.

Following the presentation, he will take questions from the audience. He also is scheduled to speak at a town hall-type forum on Tuesday afternoon. Information will be forthcoming about this second gathering.
