News Director Joins
Brave Heart Volunteers
Maury Hackett, BA, has been promoted to the position of director at Brave Heart Volunteers, the BHV board has announced.
Hackett returned to “her roots,” Sitka, in September 2017 when she was hired to fill the role of office and volunteer manager.
Hackett is a graduate of Sitka High School and Western Washington University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. Her work experience has focused on using activity-based intervention to help improve the client’s physical, social and emotional well-being.
“After 10 years of working out-of- state and pursuing professional experiences, it is an honor to return to Sitka and have the opportunity to be in a position that allows me to wholeheartedly give back to my hometown community,’’ Hackett said.
When not working, she enjoys the outdoors and capitalizes on all opportunities to explore the area.
‘‘She is an engaged community member and committed to maintaining and improving the quality of life for all Sitkans,’’ BHV said.
Scripture Walk
Slated Wednesday
St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church will lead the last Scripture Walk in the Park for the summer 5:30 p.m. Aug. 15.
All are invited to meet at Sitka National Historical Park visitor center for a short, early evening walk. For information, call 747-3977.
Chamber to Meet
Leading the Way in Alaska-Tobacco 21 and the Sitka Mermaid Festival update will be presented at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.
Speakers include city community relations coordinator Maegan Bosak, Joe Darnell from the State of Alaska, Doug Osborne from the Sitka Community Hospital and Amanda Roberts from SEARHC’s Tobacco Prevention and Control department.
Amelia Mosher will give an update on Sitka Mermaid Festival, Aug. 13-19.

Emblem Club
Sitka Emblem Club will host a luau 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Elks Lodge.
Dinner will include roast pig, hula hula chicken, rice, assorted vegetables, Hawaiian fruit and salad bar, Hawaiian rolls and assorted desserts.
Dinner, entertainment and games will be included in the $24-a-plate event.
All events at the Elks Lodge are for friends and invited guests.

Sitka Tribe of Alaska is holding its footwear certificate giveaway for back-to-school.
Tribal-enrolled school-age children are eligible to receive a $40 gift certificate to apply to a pair of shoes at Russell’s.

Weather-Spotter
Training Weds.
The Southeast Alaska Skywarn Weather Spotter Training will be taught 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Sitka Fire Department, 209 Lake Street.
The free training is offered to anyone with an interest in the weather. A Skywarn weather spotter is a trained citizen who reports hazardous weather and any impacts it is having on the community.
It is sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service.
