SAFV Postponing

Expansion Project

Sitkans Against Family Violence is postponing the renovation and expansion project for its facility by six months.

‘‘This became necessary after all bids received surpassed the available budget,’’ the SAFV board said. ‘‘Juneau architect Paul Voelckers and his team of MRV Architects are working to adapt the plans to the available funding.’’

All services SAFV offers to the community will continue at the current location. For directions, call 747-3370. 

 

Cancer Support

Group to Meet

The Cancer Support Group will meet 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Pioneers Home Chapel. Attendees should walk through the front door, walk up the ramp to the second and 1/2 floor, and follow the signs.

The group formerly met at the Pioneer Home Manager’s House.

It is a get-together to share experiences of the past and present, and talk about the future. Those in cancer treatment, cancer survivors, and their families, can spend some time with others who understand what they are going through.

The support group is sponsored by Sitka Cancer Survivors Society. Call Mary Beth with questions, or if a ride is needed to attend, at 623-0842.

Public Meeting

Sitka Tribe of Alaska Social Services will host a public meeting 11 a.m. Aug. 27 at 110 American Street.

The group will review and take comments on the renewal application for the community service block grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Community Services.

Event Set Aug. 26

Sitka Imagination Library and Sitka Emblem Club will present ‘‘Tropical Island Adventure!’’ 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26 at the Elks Lodge. The program begins at 1:15 p.m.

‘‘Tropical Island Adventure!’’ is a free literacy-themed family engagement event for ages birth to 5. Older siblings and recent graduates also are welcome.

It includes stories, movement games, art projects, a cupcake walk, face-painting, snacks and recycled book giveaways. Costumes are encouraged for little adventurers.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
