LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. Bishop to Speak

At St. Michael’s

The Right Reverend David, Bishop of Sitka and Alaska, will be at St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral this week.

Services celebrated at the cathedral during the visit of His Grace begin with the Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Alaska Day, he will join the sisterhood at the annual fish pie luncheon in the basement of the Cathedral following the service, and before joining the commemoration on Castle Hill.

Also Thursday at 6 p.m. will be the Akathist Hymn to St. Innocent. The public is invite to all of the services.

Open House at

Fire Hall Oct. 18

An Alaska Day open house is scheduled 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Sitka Fire Hall.

The Seattle Pipes and drums Bagpipers will perform and visit with the community.

 

 

Forms of Violence

Discussion Listed

Community members, particularly men, are invited to engage in conversation about unrecognized forms of violence in a series Crucial Conversations series.

Sitkans Against Family Violence will offer a panel discussion 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Centennial Hall.

Christine Pate will facilitate panel members Sgt. Gary Hall, Sitka Police Department; Kelsey Carney, STA Social Services; and Natalie Wojcik, SAFV.

Participants will learn to better understand what qualifies as domestic violence, and where to look to find out if it happens in Sitka, organizers said. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call SAFV at 747-3370.

Activity Oct. 27

The Sheldon Jackson Museum is hosting an art activity on Saturday October 27th from 10:00am – 11:00. Come and make an octopus finger puppet. The activity is best for ages 6 – 10 and it is FREE!

Russian Re-Enactors

Sought for Festival

The re-enactment Russian naval unit seeks new recruits this year for Alaska Day Festival. All persons are asked to contact Elaine Strelow at 747-3469 to arrange delivery of costumes. 

In the parade on Alaska Day afternoon, Thursday, Oct. 18, these volunteers will march under the “imperial double- eagle” to Castle Hill for the Transfer Re-enactment in which they lower the Russian flag. They may also appear as greeters at various events.

Costumes are provided including the white sailcloth shirts, dark wool pants, and black wool “bezkozirka”, the official visorless cap piped in white, that was first introduced in the Russian navy in 1811.

 

Chamber to Meet

Sitka Whalefest’s Alex Thorn will speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting noon Wednesday at Westmark Sitka.

 

The public is invited to attend.
