Ahead for Pioneers
Pioneers of Alaska state grand president James Casement will visit Sitka to install officers of local Men’s Igloo 22 and Women’s Igloo 12 on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the United Methodist Church on Kimsham Street.
Social hour is at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and formal installation of officers.

To Support Women
A special prayer service, in remembrance of missing and murdered indigenous women, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Peter’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
The service will follow the Sitka Women’s March and gathering in the See House for cookies and conversations.

5K Run, Walk
Benefit on Feb. 2
The Stride 365 5K run/walk is planned Saturday, Feb. 2. Registration is at 9 a.m. with the race to follow at 9:30 a.m. at the O’Connell Bridge lightering facility.
Registration is a $10 fee/donation to benefit the Electrical Department Fund.

ALFA to Offer
Commercial Fisher
Startup Program
Those who want to work on a small-scale commercial fishing boat and need help to get started can sign up for Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association’s Crewmember Apprenticeship Program.
CAP matches individuals new to commercial fishing or those looking to diversify their fishing skills with experienced skippers who mentor crew over short or long term apprenticeships. Educational resources and on-the-water training help those new to the industry try out commercial fishing to determine if the career and way of life are a good fit. The goal of CAP is to introduce young people to commercial fishing and to help launch the next generation of successful commercial fishermen, ALFA said in a press release.

Youth Grind
Set for Friday
The Sitka Monthly Grind’s Youth Grind will be 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Centennial Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets must be purchased in advance at Old Harbor Books and cost $5 for adults and $1 for children. Those taking a plate of homemade desserts can get the price of their ticket reimbursed at the door. Attendees are encouraged to take their own beverage cups.

‘Octopus Encounter’
At Science Center
Sitka Sound Science Center will have its first ‘‘Octopus Encounter’’ event 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19.
The monthly program will be held on the third Saturday of each month. Aquarium visitors can observe enrichment activities that keep octopuses happy and healthy.
‘‘Octopus Encounter’’ is included with the general admission fee of $5. SSSC is offering free admission to federal employees and their families 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. Work identification is needed.

Services Discussed
‘‘Unveiling the Mystery of Sitka’s Child Protective Services’’ is the title of Crucial Conversations 6-8 p.m. Feb. 6 at Centennial Hall.
A panel will discuss the mission of child protective services, help people understand its strength based approach, and decrease misconceptions and fear while interacting with this agency.
On the panel will be STA’s Indian Child Welfare Act case worker Breanna Stewart, chief tribal judge Pete Esquiro, and OCS protective services specialist Kathy Branch.
The discussion is particularly relevant for families with children, foster families, and mandatory reporters. Child care and refreshments will be provided. For information, call SAFV at 747-3370.
