TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Sitka police logged the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
April 16
At 8:29 a.m. a caller said an intoxicated man was sitting on a bike rack outside the library singing and being loud. Two more callers said he was yelling profanities. Officers gave him a warning and he left.
At 9:14 a.m. a caller said an intoxicated man in a long black trench coat was walking through the SJ campus yelling profanities, headed toward SMC. An officer talked to the caller and the man, and the caller signed a trespass complaint against the man.
Graffiti was found on the Community Playground and in restrooms.
A woman said she’d received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson and needing money. The woman said she knew it was a scam and didn’t give any information or money.
At 11:45 a.m. a caller said three men were in the national park drinking. Two left toward SMC and one toward Lincoln. Police were advised.
Damage was reported done to a garage door on Lance Drive.
At 3 p.m. a caller said a van had been parked at O’Cain and Osprey streets all day Monday and most of today. Earlier, a man had gotten out and walked over to Blatchley, and the caller said when she drove by those in the van put their heads down. An officer spoke to a man and woman in the van, and the man said the officer had no right to contact him, that he was parked because a friend lives nearby. The officer advised him to move on, and he could park at his friend’s place. He also told him his driver’s license is under a restriction that he’s to have an ignition interlock device installed, and advised him to contact DMV to take care of it.
At 3:30 p.m. a driver said a bag of feces landed on his hood and windshield as he was headed inbound in the 3800 block of HPR, near Magic Island. The driver said he didn’t see anyone in the area and waited around for a few minutes to see if anyone came out.
A Smith Street business reported finding a small plastic baggie with a white substance in it on the floor of the business. Police took custody of it and will dispose of it properly.
April 17
A caller in the 1200 block of SMC said an intoxicated neighbor had been on his porch for an hour blasting inappropriate music and videos, and couldn’t seem to get inside his house. The man told officers he couldn’t find his door key. Officers helped him find it and open the door. He was given verbal warnings for a noise disturbance and public urination.
At 1:27 a.m. a 911 caller said a man who had been out of control at a residential facility earlier had exhausted himself. He was taken to a hospital.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 10:52 a.m. and 4:43 p.m. Tuesday, and 1:29 a.m. today.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
