TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Sitka police logged the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
April 19
The driver of a van was warned after children were seen unsecured in the back.
At 6:13 p.m. a caller said an intoxicated man who had just been released from a hospital had come into the bar. The man blew a PBT of .175 and was taken to a hospital.
At 6:47 p.m. a driver said as she passed the totem park entrance inbound on SMC one rock hit her windshield and another hit the back of her car. An officer checked the area.
A caller said she had custody of her granddaughter but the girl wouldn’t leave her mother’s home. An officer responded, and the juvenile agreed to go with her grandmother.
April 20
At 12:30 a.m. a caller asked that a trespass notice be served against a woman at a bar.
At 1:28 a.m. a 911 caller in the 4300 block of HPR said a truck driver had sped backwards down a hill and into a ditch. The driver’s father said the truck had malfunctioned and a fork lift would be obtained the next day.
At 3:46 p.m. a caller said several black and white puppies and one goat were running in the roadway in the 4100 block of HPR. The animals’ owner said the goat had learned how to open the gate, and all but one of the puppies were now back in custody.
At 6:31 p.m. a caller said a vehicle with a man and woman in it had been parked near the community playground, and she could smell marijuana. They were gone when officers arrived.
At 11:17 p.m. a caller asked for advice about a roommate who had destroyed some of his belongings. Police are investigating.
April 21
At 1:58 a.m. a 911 caller asked for help with a relative who was intoxicated but wouldn’t get in a car to be taken home. Officers talked to the two and they agreed to walk home.
At 10:10 a.m. a caller said he saw a man’s dog run into the roadway and nearly get hit by a car in the 600 block of HPR, and when the man got to the dog he started beating it. Police got two other calls about the incident.
At 12:04 p.m. a caller said a suspicious man was walking down the sidewalk near the round-about carrying a hunting rifle slung over his shoulder. The caller said the man looked in distress, was swerving while walking and had a stone look. An officer contacted the man, who agreed to a PBT, which registered .000. The man said he’d just picked up the gun and was going home.
At 8 p.m. a caller said a car full of young people was going up and down Flume Circle playing loud music. An officer seized marijuana and paraphernalia, and issued a verbal warning over the loud music.
April 22
At 5:18 a.m. a 911 caller said he’d hit a deer in the 800 block of SMC, and its back legs seemed to be broken. Officers dispatched the deer and donated it to the Raptor Center.
Sitka Police
Gayle Henry-Cook, 28, was charged with violating conditions of release and unlawful contact in the first degree Friday.
Kelly Pellett, 42, was charged Saturday with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence, and assault in the fourth degree.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Dept. received ambulance calls at 6:25 p.m. and 7:43 p.m. Friday; and 10:04 a.m., 10:27 a.m., 3:10 p.m. and 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
