TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. Sitka police logged the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
April 22
At 7:09 a.m. a caller in the 4100 block of HPR said one of her dogs got loose and she has to go to work, but a family member is trying to corral the dog. The dog was returned.
At 8:40 a.m. a caller asked for a welfare check on a student who didn’t show up for school. When the caller and later an officer went to the residence no one answered the door. Dispatch called the student’s cell phone and left a message.
A caller said a protective order had been violated. An officer determined no violation had occurred.
At 1:19 p.m. a caller on Observatory Street said a truck had backed into him, pinning his leg between two vehicles. He said he wasn’t pinned any longer but was bleeding pretty good.
At 4 p.m. a caller on Smith Street said a “tweeker” was doing laps around his business and asking his daughter strange questions. An officer found no one matching the woman’s description.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 11:10 a.m. and 1:24 p.m. Monday.
Grand Jury
An Angoon man and a Sitka woman were indicted Thursday by a Sitka grand jury.
Johnnie Little George Johnson, 21, was indicted on two counts of assault in the third degree and two counts of burglary in the first degree. Counts I and II say he is accused of placing Mariah James and William Silva in fear of physical injury by means of an axe, a class C felony, on April 13 at or near Angoon. Count II states he unlawfully entered a dwelling intending to commit assault, and Count IV says that in getting into the building or in immediate flight caused or attempted to cause physical injury to another person. Both those counts are class B felonies.
Rubi G. Nicodemus, 46, was indicted on a charge of misconduct involving weapons in the second degreeand one count of assault in the third degree. She’s accused of discharging a firearm in the direction of a residence, a class B felony offense, on April 6 in Sitka. Count II says she placed another person in fear of serious physical injury by means of a dangerous instrument, a class C felony. She posted $1,500 bail, and an omnibus hearing is scheduled May 6.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
