Ketchikan Nips Juneau in Majors Baseball All-Stars
Sentinel Sports
Ketchikan’s Jason Lorig stole third and scored on a passed ball in a walk-off extra inning, 10-9, win over Juneau’s Gastineau Channel team on Tuesday night in the Little League Alaska District 2 Majors (ages 10-12) Baseball All-Stars Tournament on Moller Field.
With the game tied 9-9 heading into extra innings, Ketchikan looked like they might give up runs as three runners were on base. But catcher Jonathan Scoblic tagged a runner stealing home, pitcher Jesse Albecker struck a batter out, and Joseph Larson caught a deep fly ball in left field to end the threat.
Lorig then led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk, advanced to second on teammate Kain Dalton’s walk, stole third and scored to improve Ketchikan to 1 win and 1 loss in the round robin portion of the tourney. Juneau (0-1) plays Sitka (1-0) tonight at 6 p.m. on Moller Field. Sitka had defeated Ketchikan 17-2 to open round robin play Monday.

Tuesday night saw Juneau jump out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Christian Nelson singled in Nate Fick, Madden Mendoza singled in Ezra Vidal, Tyler Frisby singled in Mendoza, and Frisby and Reed Maier scored on a passed balls.
Ketchikan got a run back in the bottom half as Lorig hit a lead- off double and scored on an Albecker ground ball.
Ketchikan tied the score in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out rally that saw Lorig knocking in Owen Mendoza and Bryce Smith, Larson scoring on a passed ball, and Albecker singling in Lorig. Another 3 runs in the third inning (Hayden Trudeau, Smith, Lorig) and 1 in the fifth (Lorig steals home) gave Ketchikan momentum heading into the sixth inning.
Ketchikan batter Marcus Stockhausen (30) and umpire Woody Widmark look on as Juneau catcher Tyler Frisby blocks a low pitch during Tuesday’s game on Moller Field.

Juneau appeared to be done in the sixth inning as a lead-off walk earned by R. Fick was followed by two strikeouts thrown by Ketchikan’s Lorig. The Gastineau boys rallied with an Owen Woodruff walk, a Marcus Mendoza single, and a N. Fick single scoring R. Fick and Woodruff, cutting the deficit to 9-7. Vidal doubled in Brandon Casperson and N. Fick to tie the game. Juneau’s Madden Mendoza then worked three strikeouts around two walks in the inning’s bottom half to force the extra inning.
When Juneau put two runners on to start the seventh inning extra play, the Ketchikan defense clamped down with the aforementioned heroics by Scoblic, Albecker and Larson and then the First City boys offense saw Lorig continue his base path dominance in the bottom half of the inning with two steals for the win.

Lorig also led Ketchikan with 2 hits, 2 runs batted in, and 5 runs scored. Smith scored 2 runs, Owen Mendoza, Trudeau, and J. Larson 1 each. Trudeau and Smith had 3 walks, Lorig 2, Marcus Stockhausen and Dalton 1 apiece. Cash Larson, Connor Pearson, and J. Larson 1 each.
Juneau’s N. Fick and Vidal had 2 hits and 2 RBI apiece. N. Fick and R. Fick scored 2 runs apiece, Madeen Mendoza, Casperson, Vidal, Maier, and Frisby 1 each. Madden Mendoza, Nelson, and Frisby 1 RBI each. Marcus and Madden Mendoza, Maier, and Frisby 1 hit each. R. Fick had 3 walks, Marcus Mendoza 2, Nelson, Hunter Carte, Frisby, and Woodruff 1 each.

Ketchikan used four pitchers in the win: C. Larson (2 IP, 37 P, 4 H, 5 R, 3 SO, 1 BB), Scoblic (2 IP, 36 P, 3 SO, 2 BB), Lorig (1.2 IP, 37 P, 1 H, 3 R, 3 SO, 2 BB), and Albecker (1.1 IP, 35 P, 3 H, 1 R, 2 SO, 4 BB).
Juneau went five deep on the mound: Woodruff (1.2 IP, 51 P, 2 H, 5 R, 3 SO, 1 BB), R. Fick (1.1 IP, 37 P, 1 H, 3 R, 3 SO, 3 BB), Madden Mendoza (2.1 IP, 40 P, 2 H, 1 R, 1 SO, 2 BB), Vidal (0.2 IP, 24 P, 2 SO, 2 BB), and Nelson (14 P, 1 R, 2 BB).

A win by Sitka tonight would give them the top seed for the double elimination portion of the tournament starting Thursday. A Juneau win tonight means a three-way tie for top seed. Placement would be determined by run differential. The top team gets a bye and plays on Friday against the winner of Thursday’s game between the second and third seeds. Saturday is an elimination game between the Thursday and Friday losing teams. Sunday is the championship unless the loser of Sunday’s game has just one loss, forcing a Monday second game.
