LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
September 12
A cell phone found at Halibut Point rec was turned in, but couldn’t be opened. It will be at the PD for 30 days.
Keys were found among donations to the Salvation Army.
A caller said a woman called then dropped the phone, and could be heard pushing buttons but wasn’t responding. Officers contacted a woman and her husband, who said the phone accidentally got left off the hook.
At 5:48 p.m. a caller said two vehicles that appeared to be racing had nearly wrecked on HPR. Officers talked to one of the drivers who admitted to swerving around a friend who had put on her brakes. Police advised him to drive more responsibly.
At 6 p.m. a 911 caller said a male juvenile was being assaulted by another boy at 705 HPR. An officer spoke to the two and determined it was mutual combat. Parents of the two will be contacted.
At 6:28 p.m. a caller reported a couple “getting it on” pretty hot and heavy at the lightering facility on Harbor Way. They now had on their clothes, described as “black,” the caller said. Officers were on a higher priority call.
At 6:33 p.m. a caller on Cascade Creek Road reported a lady claiming to be with the Census was asking him questions then taking photos. Officers were on a higher priority call.
At 6:34 p.m. a 911 caller said her son was in the road then hung up. Other callers said a male who appeared high keeps going into the roadway, on HPR. An officer talked to the man and determined he was upset over the breakup with his girlfriend.
At 11 p.m. a caller said lights were on and containers open at a quarry site on Granite Creek Road. An officer and the manager checked and secured the buildings.
September 13
At 12:11 a.m. a caller said a man who appeared intoxicated had fallen in the road at Monastery and DeGroff. An officer determined he could care for himself, and was near home.
Sitka Police
Kymberli A. James, 38, turned herself in on a warrant which charges her with failure to appear for arraignment on an original charge of driving with a revoked license.
Linda Ozawa, 47 was charged Thursday with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.
In Court
Francis Enrique Mendez, 38, on a charge of reckless endangerment was sentenced to 180 days with 150 suspended, and ordered to complete an anger management course and get a substance abuse assessment. He will be on probation for a year. A charge of violating conditions of release was dismissed.
Kevin Joseph David, 18, was fined $500 and ordered to serve 24 hours of community work service on a charge of minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol.
Jake Joseph Vachek, 25, of Lockwood, Calif., on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, unattended vehicle damage, was sentenced to 90 days with 80 days suspended, and placed on probation one year. A charge of violating conditions of release and two more counts of leaving the scene of an accident were dismissed.
A charge of criminal trespass in the second degree filed against Joseph J. Williams, 43, was dismissed without prejudice.
Grand Jury
Larie Ann Williams, 35, was indicted Thursday on Sept. 10 charges of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree and misconduct involving a controlled substance in the third degree. She is accused of manufacturing or delivering or possessing heroin, a class B felony; and possessing with intent to manufacture or deliver methamphetamine, a class B felony.
Emergency Calls
Sitka Fire Department received ambulance calls at 9:08 a.m., 5:09 p.m. and 6:23 p.m. Thursday, and 4:12 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. today.
