Coast Guard Helps in Search for Missing Man
By Sentinel Staff
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter was sent to the Petersburg area around 1 a.m. today to help search for a 50-year-old fisherman who was on a skiff that flipped over north of Duncan Canal.
The Coast Guard received a call for help from the F/V Fishhawk, reporting their 12-foot skiff with two men aboard had drifted away while the men were helping get the fishing vessel “unstuck.” In the process, the skiff flipped from the high winds. One of the men was recovered by his shipmates, and the other was still missing at noon today as the search continued.
The specific area of the incident was Salt Chuck at the end of Duncan Canal, 11 miles west of Petersburg, the Coast Guard said.
A helicopter was launched from Sitka soon after the Coast Guard received the call, but there was no news of the missing man by Sentinel press time today. The Ketchikan-based Coast Guard cutter John McCormick and Petersburg search and rescue team members also joined the search.
The helicopter crew reported winds up to 50 knots, severe turbulence and 1 to 5 miles of visibility en route to the search area, the Coast Guard said.
