Man Missing In Skiff Mishap Found Dead

The search for Doug Larson, a Petersburg man missing after his skiff flipped in ocean waters Thursday, ended Friday with the discovery of his body by a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Sitka.
Alaska State Troopers say Larson, 50, and Charles King, 40, both of Petersburg, had been hunting when they went in their 12-foot skiff to help the F/V Fish Hawk that had run aground in Duncan Canal.
King was rescued soon after the accident, and a search was started immediately for Larson.
The Coast Guard said the helicopter was launched at 1 a.m. Friday in response to the report two men were in the water. The helicopter crew reported winds of up to 50 knots, severe turbulence and one to five miles of visibility.
Alaska State Troopers said the two Petersburg men were able to hold on to the overturned skiff for one to two hours. King was rescued, still conscious, by the crew of the Fish Hawk, and Larson was missing, the Coast Guard said.
The search for Larson involved the helicopter, a Petersburg search and rescue team, Alaska State Troopers and a Coast Guard cutter from Ketchikan, the Coast Guard said. Larson’s body was found later Friday by the Air Station Sitka helicopter crew.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and searchers,” Capt. Stephen White, commander, Coast Guard Sector Juneau, said in a news release. “This is a tragic incident that deeply impacts the entire community of Southeast Alaska.”
