Climate Connection:

Party at the Rec:

A climate change story

We hear a lot of arguments about whose ‘fault’ it is that the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is increasing. Some say that a small group of people could change their ways of making a dime, but they selfishly won’t. Others say that those selfish people were selling a product to huge numbers of us who used those products for our own selfish purposes. Seems to me that everybody has contributed to the problem and everybody can help fix it.

Think of it like a big party at the Rec which we all attended, and now it’s morning and we’re all trying to decide who gets to clean up. The hosts? The party goers? Or will it be the poor people who went to bed early last night because they’re having a birthday party at the same place later in the afternoon? I think we all know how we would answer that question. Every time it comes up on Sitka Chatters, we’re very clear that we all have a responsibility to keep the place nice for ourselves and others.

So what can we do, now that the place is trashed? We could slink away and leave it to the next person, or we could consult our values, and we can learn. The Citizens Climate Lobby in Sitka will be looking at Drawdown, a book that lists 100 actions that could have a measurable impact on greenhouse gases. If you want to start right away, you can check out Drawdown.org or borrow a copy of the book from the Sitka Public Library. You can also join us for the first meeting of the Drawdown Learning Circle from 5.45 p.m. at the Sitka Public Library on Nov. 21 to start finding some community answers to this community issue.

April 2004

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
