Coast Guard Rescues Boaters
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter on Saturday afternoon rescued a man after he intentionally ran a boat aground on Strait Island near Port Protection.
Coast Guard watchstanders received a distress call at 2:40 p.m. via VHF channel 16 from a boater aboard his 33-foot, recreational wooden fishing troller Onyx reporting the vessel was taking on water, on the northwest coast of Prince of Wales Island. He activated his EPIRB and put on his survival suit, prepared to beach the boat on Strait Island to avoid sinking.
The Coast Guard requested a helicopter launch from Air Station Sitka, and C.G. Cutters Anthony Petit and Anacapa were diverted to the area.
The helicopter crew spotted the man’s red meteor flare and strobe light and hoisted him from the island’s rocky shoreline and flew him to Sitka.
Winds at the time of the hoist were 40 mph, and conditions were “otherwise rainy and misty,” the Coast Guard said.
“Considering the cold water and air temperatures, the outcome could have been much worse,” Lt. Kyle Johnson, co-pilot for the case, said in a news release. “Fortunately, he reported his position and intentions on VHF Channel 16, signaled us with a flare, and wore a strobe light on his survival suit. Because of all this, he was able to keep his body temperature up and we were able to find him.”
Earlier Saturday, a Sitka helicopter picked up a man whose boat capsized near Juneau. He had called the Coast Guard at 10:54 a.m., reported his 12-foot Zodiac had capsized and he was adrift. He activated his inReach SOS device, but the boat engine wouldn’t start and he rowed to Shelter Island where a helicopter crew hoisted him and took him to Juneau.
“Fortunately the individual was wearing an anti-exposure suit, and was equipped with an inReach device and a cell phone to notify us of his location,” Petty Officer Brian Wells said in a news release.
The Coast Guard said at the time of the call, it was 32 degrees with gusts up to 50 mph.
