Crafts Show Opens Holiday Season

Decorations were going up at a steady not-yet-frantic pace this morning at Harrigan Centennial Hall, with bright place cards designating the tables where some 70 craftsmen, bakers, artists and nonprofit organizations will be selling wares at the 39th Annual Christmas Bazaar.
The event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday is Sitka Counseling’s only fundraiser of the year.
Santa will be available for photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the auditorium stage.
Organizers say the approximately $8,000 raised annually at the event is used to help purchase such items as toiletries for clients as well as Christmas gifts and clothing, which are not covered through grants and fees charged. There is a $2 admission fee, with kids under 12 admitted free, and the vendors contribute 5 percent of their sales.
“We’re able to give back to clients we serve with this event,” said Sitka Counseling executive director Amy Zanuzoski.
The organization has counseling programs for all ages, including a 12-bed residential transitional counseling program for adults, which serves some 40 clients a year. It also has an outpatient counseling program for about 350 clients a year, from age 3 through senior citizens.
“It’s any kind of counseling,” Zanuzoski said.
The main goal of the organization is to “prevent and reduce the harmful effects of mental illness and substance abuse in the lives of youths, adults, and families” through providing professional therapeutic and preventative services, the organization’s website says.
Sitka Counseling clients and staff will host food booths at the event, and baked goods and edible items also will be offered by other individuals and organizations. Most of the booths feature crafts and artwork.
The bazaar is a decades-old institution that the community seems to enjoy, organizers said.
“It’s a tradition in this town – it kicks off the holiday season,” said Kerry Tomlinson, Sitka Counseling finance director.
“It’s a fun thing, seeing the creativity of the community,” Zanuzoski said.
“There’s a lot of creativity in this town,” agreed April Troup, the director of the Sitka Counseling bazaar.

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
