Two-Step Dance

Class is Tonight

Two-step dance lessons begin tonight at the New Archangel Dance Studio, 208 Smith Street. Instruction is 7-8:30 p.m.

‘‘Two-step is the most popular dance step in America, we are told,’’ instructors Beth and Owen Kindig said. ‘‘It is a very easy dance to learn. So this is a great night to come and get off to a good start.’’

It was snowing so hard last Tuesday that the regular dance class was canceled.

Suggested donation is $5 per couple. Donations are given to the New Archangel Dancers.

Clean inside shoes, wool socks, or dance slippers are a must.

‘‘If you can, bring a partner but if you don’t have one, come anyway,’’ the Kindigs said.

For information call 752-7001.

A Community dance is planned 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at the Sitka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall.  Belly Meat will perform live music. The suggested donation is $15 per couple; $5 for the church and $10 for the band.

For information contact Beth and Owen Kindig at 752-7001.

Film to Observe

MLK Jr. Day

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Sitka National Historical Park will show ‘‘Never Lose Sight of Freedom’’ 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at  the park visitor center.

The 25-minute film gives viewers an opportunity to revisit the event by watching historic news footage and hearing personal memories of those who marched. It is the introductory film shown at Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail in Alabama, an NPS site that preserves the places and stories of the five-day, 54-mile march that played a key role for African Americans in gaining the right to vote.

A short clip featuring news reports of the march and Martin Luther King’s address given on the steps of the capitol at the conclusion of the march will also be shown.

For information about the film series, contact the park visitor center at 747-0110.
