The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
July 24
At 8:23 a.m. a resident in the 4300 block of HPR reported a bear tearing into her neighbor’s garbage. Fish and Game was advised.
Troopers asked Sitka police to serve a summons.
At 12:54 p.m. a caller reported a red punching bag had been stolen from a gazebo on Siginaka Way. The bag was described as two feet long and 12 to 14 inches in diameter. The caller estimated the theft occurred between 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday.
A state worker asked for help dealing with an upset customer. Police talked to the customer, who was advised of his options for obtaining a legal driving permit. Police seized the man’s weapon after he failed to declare he was carrying it, and gave him a warning for misconduct involving weapons.
A caller reported two males shot at a bear on Viking Way. Police were unable to locate the bear or the kids who reportedly shot at it. Troopers discovered the shot was the sound of a seal bomb.
At 4 p.m. police gave two people arguing loudly in the 200 block of Katlian Street a disorderly conduct warning.
At 4:22 p.m. officers checked on a report of two men beating up a third person in the 2300 block of HPR, but the men left the area on bicycles. Police found no one in the area needing help.
At 4:31 p.m. a building owner reported people being belligerent and not leaving the building. One person left the area before officers arrived.
An iPhone left in a taxi was turned in to police.
At 10:08 p.m. the fire department asked for traffic control while dynamite was removed from the 100 block of Lance Drive.
At 11:57 p.m. a caller reported neighbors fighting. Police found everyone was intoxicated but not fighting.
July 25
At 1:24 a.m. police investigated a reported assault at a hotel, and made an arrest. An ambulance took a man to the hospital.
At 4:33 a.m. a resident reported bears getting into some trash near her trash can at Eliason Harbor. Police and troopers found the bear, which crossed Edgecumbe Drive and went into the Georgeson Loop neighborhood.
At 5:49 a.m. a resident reported a bear in the 4300 block of HPR was tipping over trash cans. It headed off into the woods as officers arrived.

Robert T. Shearer, 40, was charged early today with assault in the fourth degree.
Emergency Calls
The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 11:30 a.m., 1:25 p.m., 2:24 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8 p.m. Thursday and 1:29 a.m. today.
At 10:30 a.m. Thursday the fire department and police were sent to 101 Lance Drive where a worker operating a backhoe uncovered unexploded ordnance. (See story, Page 1.)

This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
