SE Search for Juneau Boater Is Suspended
By Sentinel Staff
The U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers suspended the search Tuesday for a 52-year-old Juneau man whose 32-foot boat was found circling in the Auke Bay area Monday, the Coast Guard said.
No sign of the missing man, Paul Keithahn, was found before the search was suspended, the Coast Guard said.
During the 32 hours of active searching, the troopers, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a search dog team, a Coast Guard cutter and helicopters from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka covered an area estimated at 190 square miles, the Coast Guard said.
The effort started Monday afternoon after the pleasure craft Spellbound was spotted circling in the Coghlan Island area, near Auke Bay, with no one at the helm.
The Coast Guard in Juneau called the owner’s wife, who said she hadn’t heard from her husband since Saturday. The Juneau Coast Guard detachment investigated and found the boat unoccupied, though the missing man’s cell phone was still on board.
The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter from Sitka and the cutter Liberty joined the search Monday evening.
The Coast Guard issued a statement today saying that calling off a search is always a tough decision to make.
“The decision to suspend our active search efforts is always difficult,” said Cmdr. Marc Burd, chief of response, Coast Guard Sector Juneau. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family members of Mr. Keithahn.”
