Wolves Complete Weekend Sweep
By TOM HESSE
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka High Wolves volleyball team will be hard-pressed to improve on their first series of home play after sweeping Anchorage Christian School in three meetings over the weekend.
Sitka won all eight sets against ACS, starting with their 25-10, 25-15, 26-24 win on Thursday. Friday night, Sitka won a best-of-three set scrimmage 25-17, 25-20.
Sitka’s unbeaten streak for the two days was tested Saturday in the first set, when the Wolves fell behind 14-7 early. Sitka then went on a 13-2 run that included three kills by Meaghan Way and two blocks from Zoe Krupa. The run put the Wolves out in front 18-16 but the visiting Lions hung tough with Sitka, battling to a 21-21 tie. Back-to-back kills from Natalie Galanin and Krupa gave Sitka the edge and Galanin put the set away with an ace.
Sitka coach Natalie Voron said her team practices in a way that conditions them to work out of tough spots.
“Honestly, we set up our practices to put a little pressure on them. We play this game called 22-16 and we have the junior varsity start with 22 points and the varsity has to fight for every point to 25,” Voron said. “I think what it does is emphasize how to respond when you get down. The preparation really paid off because they have that feeling that they’ve done this before.”
In the second set the Wolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead before ACS narrowed the margin to 7-6. Sitka then took over the match and ran out to a 25-13 win in the second set. Sitka put away the weekend with a 25-22 win in the third set.
“We had a really exceptional weekend,” Voron said. “The girls are looking really tough early in the year.”
Galanin had 22 kills on the weekend. Fellow seniors Elle Gray and Maraellia Romine combined for another 24 kills and Krupa accounted for 11 blocks. Gray also took home the floor-burn award by digging 57 balls over three matches including 36 in a single meeting.
“Our defense has been really strong and we’ve had girls all over the floor,” Voron said.
Sitka opens the conference schedule this week beginning with a match Tuesday night at Mt. Edgecumbe High School. The Braves also beat ACS in three meetings, dropping only one set on Saturday. The Braves beat Sitka in all four regular season meetings last season. Tuesday night’s match will start at 7:15 p.m.
“We’re just hoping to continue playing really well together,” Voron said of the Mt. Edgecumbe match. “We know that it’s probably going to be a more challenging game. It’s early in the season now so we’re still looking to improve and just get better as a unit.”
This weekend Sitka will head to Petersburg for two more conference matches. The Wolves won’t be back in their home gym till Oct. 3, when Petersburg comes to town.
