Sitka High’s Curt Bartlett and Mt. Edgecumbe senior Paul Johanson each came away from the Petersburg Invitational wrestling tournament with a first-place finish this past weekend.
Johanson picked up right where he left off last season, when he went undefeated on his way to a state championship at 285 pounds. Johanson won two of his three matches by fall, including the third round match against teammate Jared Huntington. Huntington finished in fourth place.
The Wolves were led by Bartlett at 98 pounds. Bartlett went 3-0 with two wins by fall and a third by major decision over Ketchikan’s Payton Stewart.
Five wrestlers scored points for the Wolves on their way to a seventh-place finish in the 15-team tourney, with 70.5 points. Sophomore Caleb Suarez finished fourth in the 132 pound bracket to score 13 points.
Kyler Sumauang scored 10 points at 138 pounds, Brandon Tulcey scored 9 points at 145 pounds and Josh Young scored 9 points in the 152 bracket. Josh Goeden rounded out the team’s total by going 2-2 in the 182 pound division to score 6.5 points.
Mt. Edgecumbe finished in eighth place at Petersburg, four points behind the Wolves. Johanson’s 18 points led Mt. Edgecumbe, followed by Antonio DeAsis who finished third in the 120 pound bracket to score 15 points.
Kole Lliaban finished in fourth place among 195 pound wrestlers to score 11 points for the Braves. Sydnee Kimber went 3-2 at 152 pounds to score 9.4 points. Marcus Redfox would add five points at 138 pounds and Frederick Coolidge (132) and Stephen Guy (145) each scored four points.
The Wolves are scheduled to wrestle in Juneau this weekend and both teams will be at the ACS Tournament in Anchorage on Halloween weekend.
