Record Turnout for WhaleFest 5K, 10K

The 18th annual WhaleFest Run drew a record turnout Friday morning under beautiful sunny skies, said race organizer Brian Beall.
Dylan Peterson led the men’s field in the 10K race with a time of 34.11. Katherine Gluth was the winner of the women’s 10K with a time of 44.04.
“The race went fine,” Beall said. “Everybody had a great time and we even saw whales.”

Peterson edged out Sam Scotchmer by a mere five 100ths of a second for the victory, with Scotchmer clocking in at 34.16. Sitka High sophomore Colin Baciocco was third in the men’s race, with his time of 35.19.
In the women’s field of 10K runners, Gluth was about four minutes ahead of Crystal Ivy, who crossed the finish line with a time of 48 minutes, and 22 seconds. Alison Schulte was third, at 49.29.
In the men’s masters category, Bernie Gurule logged the fastest time, at 49.09, followed by Charles Horan (52.10) and Brett Wilcox, who crossed the line at 58.21.
The women masters racers logged some quick times, with Mary Barrett the fastest in the category at 51.19, followed by Amenda Johnson, 53.54, and Susea Albee, who finished at one hour on the dot.
In the 5K race, Paul Killian was the fastest runner among the men, with a time of 18.52, followed by Reid Magdanz at 19.58, and Kincaid Parsons, who finished in 20.43.
For the women, Amber Blackhurst ran a swift 19.21. Marissa Carson crossed the line next, at 24.17, followed closely by the trio of Emil Blackman, Heidi Pearson and Anna Prussian who all finished together, at 24.41.
John Baciocco was the age group winner for the 5K, and Bob Federoff and Mary Fedoroff were the men’s and women’s 5K masters winners.
