Riggs Leads Wolves in Comeback Over MEHS

By TOM HESSE

Sentinel Staff Writer

KETCHIKAN – Sid Riggs did everything short of selling popcorn this morning to ensure that her senior season would include at least one more game.

“I wasn’t going to lose. We were going to do everything we possibly could to beat that team,” Riggs said.

Thirteen fourth-quarter points and a brilliant 20 seconds of basketball at the end of the game by Riggs carried Sitka over the Mt. Edgecumbe girls basketball team 43-41 at the Region Tournament this morning.

The game was tied at 41 points and Mt. Edgecumbe was inbounding on the sideline with 20 seconds to go when Riggs forced a steal from Mt. Edgecumbe point guard Renatta Olson and scored the go-ahead basket with 9 seconds to play. Riggs then ran down Olson on defense and blocked the final shot of the game, a 3-pointer, to help the Wolves advance to a championship matchup with Petersburg Friday.

“I knew that we needed the steal to win and I could tell the whole game that I was in her face and she was scared so I knew if I took it to her I could hopefully get a turnover and that’s what happened,” Riggs said.

Mt. Edgecumbe took a timeout before the final series and Sitka coach Sondra Lundvick said she was confident coming out of that timeout that her team could force a turnover.

“I talked to them about playing good position defense and that we had a foul to give so we could take a chance. Quite honestly, at the end of the game I feel very comfortable with us on defense. That’s our strength. We’re not hiding that, that’s our strength,” Lundvick said.

Riggs, a senior, finished with a game-high 25 points and was instrumental in the Wolves’ comeback from a 4-point deficit entering the fourth quarter. After Mt. Edgecumbe sophomore Payton Weisz put the Braves on top 36-30.

Riggs went on a 9-point run that gave Sitka a 39-36 lead with under two minutes to play. Taryn White stopped the run with a layup at the 1 minute mark and Weisz would tie the game 20 seconds later on a 3-pointer. It was one of three shots Weisz hit from behind the arc this morning.

Sitka took the lead early with a 15-9 advantage after the first quarter but Mt. Edgecumbe wouldn’t go away. A 7-0 run at the end of the first half brought the Braves to within one point heading into halftime, and a 9-0 run in the third quarter allowed them to take their first lead of the second half. Lundvick said the difference today was her team’s ability to withstand those runs.

“The whole thing is, basketball is a game of runs. You talk about tempo and controlling it all the time. We took several outside shots in a row and I told them let’s punch it in and get an easy one to get back in the flow again,” Lundvick said.

Sitka hit on five 3-pointers for the game. Zoe Krupa had two of them to finish with 6 points. Kalene Koelling scored 4 points, Tatum Bayne and Ellie Cagle each scored 3 and Hailey Denkinger scored 2.

The Wolves will play Petersburg Friday at 11:30 a.m. If the Vikings win, they will be region champions. If Sitka wins it will force a deciding game Saturday. The Wolves haven’t beaten the Vikings yet this season and Lundvick said she expects another close game Friday.

“I’m not so sure anything changes. I think we just come out and play hard again. Shots sometimes fall and sometimes don’t and that’s going to make a huge difference in this game,” she said.

Tori Thomas and Weisz led Mt. Edgecumbe with 11 points. Taryn White scored 6 points and Renatta Olson had 5 points. Daisy Hunt and Zhane White scored 4 points. It was the last game for seniors Taryn White, Olson, JoAllyn Johnson and Leigh Ripke. The Lady Braves will not be headed back to the state tournament, where they finished second last season.

Petersburg 42, Mt. Edgecumbe 28

The Braves ended up playing against Sitka this morning after Petersburg, which beat Sitka to open the tournament, held Mt. Edgecumbe to 3 points in the final quarter of Wednesday’s round 2 game.

The Vikings held a 3-point lead over Mt. Edgecumbe entering the fourth quarter of that contest but pulled ahead in the final 8 minutes by outscoring the Braves 14-3. Three different Vikings players managed to score more points in the fourth quarter than the entire Mt. Edgecumbe squad. As a team, Petersburg shot more freethrows in the fourth quarter (9) than Mt. Edgecumbe shot the entire game (7).

It was the second game in a row that Petersburg managed to pull ahead late at the charity stripe. In Tuesday’s opener the Vikings led by just 1 point over Sitka and then shot 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to top Sitka 49-40. Kylie Wallace again served as the closer for Petersburg, shooting 4-4 at the line to finish the game and leading all scorers with 20 points.

Taryn White led Mt. Edgecumbe with 15 points followed by Renatta Olson and Tori Thomas, who each had 5 points. Payton Weisz scored 3 points.
