Forest Service Issues Tongass Fire Warning
High temperatures are forecast for the Tongass National Forest through the Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. Forest Service said.
Tongass fire officials are asking that residents be cautious with any open fire activities.
‘‘If you do have any type of a fire, do not leave it unattended at any time, and please make sure you take the time to put it out completely,’’ the Forest Service said.
“The lightning storms this week started several fires,” said Forest Fire Management Officer Tristan Fluharty. “Lightning fires are very unusual on the Tongass. This is an indication of how dry the forest is. Fire danger is very high across the Tongass.”
“It has been my experience in Sitka that people leave the fire or think they put the fire out but it smolders in the duff for days and then pops up as a fire that we need to send personnel out to extinguish costing money and diverting them from their regular duties,” said Sitka District Ranger Perry Edwards. ‘‘Please be sure your fire is dead out.’’
