‘Lost’ Couple Found At Circus
By Sentinel Staff
A search for a California couple who hadn’t been seen for more than a day by their Sitka B&B host ended happily Wednesday.
The two had been at the circus.
CIRCUS SET – Sitkans line up at the entrance of the traveling Family Fun Circus on lower Moller Field Wednesday evening. The circus advertises magic clowns, daredevils and the “Motorcycle Madness Globe of Death.” The final performance is 7 p.m. tonight. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)
Sitka Fire Department search and rescue Capt. Lance Ewers said the couple was last seen by their B&B host at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when they left on a hike. The B&B operator called the police for help late Wednesday afternoon.
Ewers said the searchers, working with police, entered the couple’s room at the B&B and found a cell phone, which they assumed belonged to the couple. When rescuers called the last number in the phone’s log, Ewers said, “the husband answered.”
It turned out the husband and wife were at the circus that’s in town at Moller Field, and hadn’t been lost – they just hadn’t seen the B&B host since returning from their hike the previous day, Ewers said.
On another call, a search team went to the Indian River drainage Wednesday evening to look for a young man whose family was worried about him. The team found no sign of him, but he returned home safely on his own at 9:30 p.m., Ewers said.
